Do we stick at the factory recommended 80,000kms?

I remember a friend saying its better changed at 60,000...

Any thoughts?

I thought the factory was 120,000 but change at 80,000.

When I purchased mine it had 103,000 on it and I had it changed within a week as I had read all the horror stories about if it goes .

Justin Cooper is the man for the best answer, he is on the forum and has a workshop at Kingston.

I think 80000km is acceptable, from memory i thought it was 100000km or 120000km and it was changed to 80000km, but alot of people change them at 60000km to be sure.

Brian,
Your 300tdi can go forever on its timing belt as the Magnets you have also increase the life of the timing belt.....

They are a great thing......

Sorry to hijack but mine is nearly due to be done, its a 300tdi, and I was wondering if it is a job that can be done at home. Sorry again to hijack your thread!

I bought my 300 TDi Defender second hand from a local dealer.

I couldn't see any evidence in the service records of when the belt was last changed so the dealer made a few phone calls to LR dealers and to places that had serviced the vehicle in the past.

He got three different answers about when it should be changed. So good luck in trying to get a definitive answer.

I got him to change mine before I bought it.

Brian,

60 to 80k is a good rule of thumb. 60k in arduous/ tropical conditions, 80k is what we recommend them done at for normal use etc. i have seen them at 100+k but they are pushing the reliability envelope at that timeframe. Also, 5 years is a good interval to change a rubber belt. NEVER replace a belt on a diesel engine without a new tensioner and idler, it is a waste of time.

My "new" 300Tdi without the needed minor mod kit had gone 137,000 between changes. When I checked it out, I reckon if I'd driven another 500 metres it would have gone:D.

Ah, but did he?
I am pretty confident that he did because I asked to see the old one so that I could check its condition. It is not very likely that he would have had a slightly used one on hand to show me.

As it turned out, it must have only been a reasonably short time since it had previously been changed.

The other sign that he had probably done some work on the motor was that there was a significant leak of coolant from a hose because a clamp had not been done up tight enough.:p

Mines been done every 100k with everything changed each time and I've only had the tensioner fail not the belt.Mine has run the updated pulleys from 3 months old. Pat

Hope everything else was done up tight.

A very senior person at Land Rover told me "50,000 and don't miss".

Personally I think almost all the problems that people have with them can be put down to not fitting them correctly.Like any belt, chain etc the tension and alighnment are most important, they are either perfect or wrong. Pat

Didnt "we" figure out it was overtensioning?
