View Full Version : Mounting options for a Uniden UH015SX?

I'm in the process of mounting my new UH015SX in my 110 County. I have the option to seperate the remote head from the body so one thought I've had is to mount the body of the radio up out of sight on the underside of the roof between the roof lining and the metal of the roof.
However, I'm wondering if that's such a good idea being that with the sun on the metal roof of the truck, it might get pretty hot between it and the lining and I may end up overheating the unit. I welcome your thoughts on this.
Also I'm keen to hear other thoughts on where else the body of of the radio could be located out of sight in a 110 County. Has any one successful positioned one behind the instrument panel? There might be space enough there.
Cheers, Iain

Hi Iain, I definitely would not put it in the roof lining as it will cook in summer time heat.If you have a cubby box between the front seats maybe it would fit inside, especially if you use an extension speaker so that the lid can be down while driving and you can still hear the radio.Otherwise the 110 has little space to play with in the dash.Depending on the length of cable between the head unit and the main body of the radio, you may fit it out of sight under the rear seat. The head unit will probably go in the dash area depending on whether you have air con or not or perhaps in the cubby where it won't take up much room.I fitted mine behind the box and draped a towel over it when the vehicle was out in the open street. Hope this is helpful.Cheers, 130man.

speaking from experience, they definitely dont like the heat, and the cable is about 1-1.5 metres

Mount the base unit under the cubby (or seat) and then put the head unit on the front of the cubby or up on the dash somewhere.

Well I've had a busy Sunday mounting the radio. :)
In the end I chose to remote mount it behind the instrument panel. There was a space just big enough immediately behind the gauges and after fabrication of a couple of mounting brackets it all worked out really well.
The photos below show the brackets and the final mounting locations of the head and the body.
The top two mounting points for the body are the existing mounting bolts for the rear of the instrument panel. The bottom two munting points had to be drilled into the back of the firewall and were attached with a couple of self-tapping screws.

All in all a very successful Sunday in the shed :D

Very neat. Would never have thought of mounting it there. Good bit of lateral thinking!

you *may* have issues with heat with it under the dash like that
known issues are:
scan frequencies changing or zero'ing
group scan channels changing by themselves
turning the unit on and getting a blank screen

Thanks for the headsup. :( Are these known issues particularly with the Uniden UH015sx or is this how any unit like this is likely to missbehave when it gets hot?
I'll have to have a closer look in the daylight but I think the area may get at least a small amount of airflow when the front flap vents are open. I'll investigate and report back. :)
Thanks again for your comments.

these are known issues with the UH105sx, from my own personal experience, got the main unit in my falcon mounted under the parcelshelf in the boot, only ever had problems in summer, so i'm putting the problems i've had down to the high ambient temperatures in the boot in summer (dark blue car)

have you mounted an external speaker with it or is it audible despite being enclosed? (assuming that the speaker is not in the face or handset)

Why would there be problems roof mounting it ?
i haven;t even GOT a roof lining in my Defender and it doesn;t get all that hot. And if they didn't work mounted up there, then the roof console manufacturers would go out of business.
then again I have a GME - not aware of any dramas with them but I hadn;t heard about Uniden dramas until now either.

I've remote mounted an external speaker on the headlining just above and behind the drivers seat.
The unit does have a speaker on the body but I'm also certain you would not hear it when it's buried so deep behind the dash. The 300Tdi is not known for it quiteness :)

Thanks for the advice. I checked under the dash and the plate that the unit is mounted too is directly in the airflow of the front opening vents so I'm hopeful it'll be OK. However, I will monitor it and if required I could always pop a couple of holes in the plate to enhance the air flow.
