Finally realised a 20-odd year dream on Friday afternoon and picked up my first ever Landrover, a 300TDi defender. First drive was a 2 hour fight with Melbourne peak hour traffic in the rain before reaching the western highway and relative sanity.
The landy has 181000 on the clock with the normal accessories ie bullbar, winch, dual batteries, maxi-drives etc.
I spent the weekend tinkering. Fitted the 130 HD springs to the front to cure the droop, cleaned her inside and out, played around with the rear drawer system and mounted the fridge and water tank and found homes for the recovery gear. I can't believe how much room there is.
Roof rack and snorkel go on tomorrow and hopefully I get the chance to fit the low level coolant alarm (thanks Davy for the prompt service) before the weekend.
I took the wife out for a drive Sunday afternoon on some mild 4WD tracks. She loved it; so much so I had to give up the drivers seat so she could have a go. This was one of the few times she asked to drive when we have been out in the bush, regardless of vehicle.
We are now looking forward to the Easter weekend and the chance for a longer trip and some camping.
Cheers, Martin
