Hi all, I am looking at buying a new defender 110, looking at the accessories, I would love to have all the ones on the adventure list. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was worth getting them from the dealer as I buy it or after market, also as I don't want to spend to much more money than I already am so on a budget which one would be the best i.e. how would you prioritize them.
thanks
Patrick

Thanks for that, I am actually buying it through a novated lease, so I guess it will be worth while getting a quote with all the extras on it to see the difference. if not I am happy to add the good bits as I go.
And thanks for the welcome, I have wanted to buy a defender all my life now I am getting the chance I can't wait and it will be good to be part of this club

New Defender accessories, hmmm. Yes I know what I would option it up with. Salisbury rear end.
24 spline Rover front diffs.
Vents under the windscreen.
Doors and body panels that seal from daylight, even better if they would exclude water and dust.
Or is that too much to ask?

Here's my take on it all:
• A-frame Protection Bar - Mantec or similar bar from Rovacraft or others would be better
• 16 inch Boost Alloy Wheels - 16" Boost alloy's are standard or are you thinking 18"?
• Chequer Plate Protection Kit - about $750 extra but does look good (see below)
• Expedition Roof Pack - Get a Hannibal
• Front and Rear Lamp Guards - Expensive and make's the lights hard to clean
• Undershield - There are other options to the OEM, but all are about the same`.
• Wing Top Protectors - about $500 extra, OEM checker plate is 3mm anondised and much better than the after market.
• 9.5Ti Electric Winch - OEM kit is expensive, consider the 9.5XDC as its a lot cheaper, also you'll want to put the heavy duty springs in for the winch.
What about a snorkel?

Don't forget the mudflaps. Also because it's on a lease you get 3 years free servicing. And A free set of rubber mats all round. Chase them on this!
Personally I'd not put a roofrack on the PUMA, that's the end of parking in the city - and also their roof structures are not really brilliant long term with a rack. You'll end up with cracked gutters.
One of the better things I've had on a leased Fender is a Long Range Fuel tank.
Under body wax is a good option - Get this done by the dealer. But ask to inspect the chassis before it goes of to be undersealed and get them to fix the paint on the welds where it has cracked and peeled.
Many companies have a limit on the price of the car and acc. Otherwise it gets Lux car tax. This does limit the acc's you can get.
Melville and Moon Seat covers are well worth it.
IMHO Light protectors are a useless. The only times I've impacted them on my vehicles I've ended up with some expensive panel damage. I'd rather replace a $5 lense than have to unbend the rear panels on a fender.

What are you paying monthly for the novated lease??? just wondering as we were looking into again, however be very carefull you dont come out before the end of the lease, we were very much miss sold the pakage, and no one ever talked to us of the pros and cons, we ended up getting out of a lease after 18 months and i worked out it would have been alot cheaper, to have had a bank loan, and taken into consideration the servicing fuel insurance, in that time, it cost more to get rid than it would have costed after 5 years.

It works out at 1300 a month. 800 of that is for the actual defender and the rest for everything else. 14000k a year so 222 per month for fuel 71 for insurance 38 for rego. Then tyres and other stuff. Also In the price is the 7 seats and metalic paint. I want santorini black not sure if that is metalic. Can't get much info of the LR website so going to have to go back down to the dealer and get the details sorted with other options so I can get a new quote from the leasing company.
Thanks all for your input. I am wondering if I should just get the def and option it later as I can afford it and have more knowledge.

Just thought I would add I am only considering the novated lease as my employer will package it into my salary so should save a little on tax

My tip would be to buy the car basically stock then add the accessories at the first service.
The reason is the FBT is calculated on the purchase price! And you don't wan't to hit luxury car tax etc.
Before fitting all the accessories get a quote for the installation of all the goodies and then talk to the leasing company about adding in these accessories to the payment plan.
This way you get all the goods and your FBT is lowered.
Worth checking it out.

they crack on all defenders.......we have a roof rack just be choosey where you park in the city;):D
if you have a roof rack it makes it easier to hang an awning etc and carry things from bunningsa that you cant get in the back....they come in a lot more use than just touring trips

Thanks all for your help. I spoke to the dealer he advised that with the seven seat optin and metalic paint I was bordering on LCT. He also advised taking the defender as standard then adding later. I guess this will have to be! Unfortunatly there are no santorini black 7 searers in Oz. There are 3 on the ship that left the UK in march he is going to try and get a hold of one, otherwise I have to wait unto one built in June is shipped. I am sure either way it will be worth it.
One more question. Is there anything I 'must' add before I take the bog standard defender off road, the first thing I will do after a 4x4 course is head to Fraser for the weekend.
Thanks again you have bee great.

"short drive" on the beach.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/04/1184.jpg
Snorkel, UHF, side steps (wife's option) and M&M seat covers fitted, but otherwise it was bog standard.
The green one and the Tdi were a bit more added to, but not a lot.

I'd do some rustproofing before Fraser and give it a very thorough clean after, especially inside the box sections.
No 'must' adds really needed on a Defender unless you are doing serious rock climbing then a steering guard. If I did it again first thing would be rock sliders, as much for car park door hits as rock scrapes.

Very important,as the paint job on the chassis of the Puma that my son has is extremely poor:mad:
There is already rust spots on many of the chassis welds ,some of them around 6mm in diameter, hasnt been back to the dealer yet for an inspection....is going soon.Only done 300km,hasnt been near the beach.
The chassis paint on my TD5 is way better.
He is gonna get the electronic rust thingy on it,as it will be on the beach a bit.

Save your money, they do NOT work.
I have always been skeptical of those things, but many people swear by them .
My sons mate has a Rodeo that is regularly on the beach,is never washed or for that matter looked after & doesnt have any rust on it.It has one of the electronic things on it.
For me i have always had mine coated by the Ming product, but they seem to put less on these days.I have done a lot of beach work & never had any problems, but you do have to keep a good eye on everything & any spots i use fisholine. My brother uses a Lanolin product, which seems to work well.
I will say one thing,as said ,the paintwork on the chassis on the brand new Puma is absolutely disgracefull:mad:

Guys, Just on the final step of ordering my new Defender..
I got prices for a couple of options and wanted to know what you thought, these are dealer prices for genuine parts including fitting.
black chequer plate kit including wing tops: $1895
Expedition Roof Rack: $2300
Snorkel $1800
I will source a bull bar and winch from somewhere else as they will only supply and fit the A frame Bar.
Do you think this is expensive? I am still going to salary package it so probably wont make a great deal of difference to the cost.
Thanks

Please go to rover craft who advertise here and get a price for these things and also give arb/ tjm a call about snorkle/ bullbar. You may be salary packaging but you will lose more than your tax advantge with the LR dealer charging you MORE than double what it will cost you buying and getting it fitted elsewhere!

Do you know where I can get a price list or do I just contact them with the parts I want a price for?

Only caution I would add is that fitting anything on the air intake yourself could cause you warranty issues, if for example the engine is dusted. You'd be able to fight them on this but its a PITA, better to get them to fit the snorkel for you and then it's all under their warranty. Might cost a bit more, but it will take years of your life fighting the warranty crap.
Lance Dixon's were willing to buy and fit an ARB snorkel (Safari) for cost, I ended up paying $450 or something like that. That was some time ago though. I also got a Warn 8274 for their cost price from ARB.
I'd also avoid putting a roof rack on it for the first few months - it's possible it might have to go back for water leak fixes or a panel realignment - which might be refused if you fit a roof rack.

When we bought our Defender (novated lease in 2006) we had snorkel, ARB winch bar and heavy duty towbar fitted at purchase. The snorkel and bullbar were fitted by ARB and were cheaper than Land Rover items by far.
If you get a towbar and you are intending on fitting a long range fuel tank at a later date, fit a genuine Hayman Reece towbar. The usual long range tank will not fit with a Land Rover towbar.
All items were included in lease and the total vehicle cost was about $8000 below list. ie list price at the time on road was around $54000. With extras we paid $46000.

I bought (and had fitted by dealer) the genuine LR full black checker plate kit and snorkel - 2 years ago - it was extortion then, but those prices are nuts.
This still hurts, but the full checker kit and snorkel fitted were $2000.00. Now that is expensive, but I still reckon it was worth it. I've had a close look at other owners Rovercraft etc kits, but I am yet to see a checker kit which I think is as good as the genuine article (no offense anyone). On the other hand, I preferred the OL low profile racks to anything else. Have a good look around at what's available before you buy anything - you can get the genuine stuff within 3 months of purchase and get the full 3 year warranty, so no need to buy straight away if you haven't done enough research.
Whatever you buy - you have for life. That's why my Puma is loaded with genuine accessories.

OK the order is being placed, this is what I have ordered, he is coming back with a total price, I did not order the full kit for the chequer plate just the wing tops, this was for cost and advice that it may not be benefitioal to have it along the bottom an on the corners, I think I will probably get the steel rear corners when I get the bullbar.
Unfortunatley delivery wont be until the second week of November, seemingly there are no 7 seat black ones in town. Oh well my Birthday in Decmber so a great Birthday present.

Only other thought for what to add for Fraser would be recovery towing points.
1) So you can pull other's out.
2) So you can be pulled out should you get stuck due to inexperience (not due to the car).

Hmm....not sure how one can be miss sold a lease or as to what the pro's and con's are unless the person has never had finance before. Also I would tend to disagree that a bank loan would have been cheaper...assuming you are talking a personal loan.
Quite simply the pro's of a lease is that you can build a residual into the deal...ideally ensuring that the residual is low so the debt is going to ideally be less than what the car will be worth at the designated term. There really isn't a con per se bar the fact that with any finance agreement...if you go to pay it out early into the contract...you are going to get stung...thats a given. Reason being is that you are only paying interest....no principal until you are well into the contract.
The funder has designated a stream of income from that lease over a set period, so if you payout early you will need to repay principal plus a proportion on the interest that would have been incurred. This would be no different to a bank loan. Only the structure is different as general funding for consumers for vehicles are Personal Loans bar one or 2 funders I use ( Im a finance broker) where residuals can be built into the deal for a consumer loan.
If anyone wants further information...especially from a business perspective the differences between Leases/Chattel and CHP, let me know and I can email you a fact sheet on them all,

Hi all, thanks for all your advice, I am now awaiting a delivery date, can't wait..
In the end I only ordered the tow bar as I want to start towing straight away, going to buy a small tinny and need something to mover a trailer to the tip, nothing strenuous.
All the other options from LR were extreme, they wanted 1800 for the snorkel and 1200 just for the wing tops, everything else came in at around 2k an option. I figured I would just get the car and then shop around once I have figured out what I want, I may even go back to LR for an option within the 3 months as suggested if I feel it is worth while, but I just cant see how they can justify the prices they charge.
Anyway once it comes I will get some pics up. cheers.
