Leaking Brake Vacuum Pump - TDCi

Bugger - nice timing as usual... The pumps gone or a seal has - oil sprayed over the passenger side of engine bay.... :eek:

Question ???
- is it relatively safe to drive to the stealers (20kms) or should it be flat bedded? The latter is just a hassle (yes i have cover but its a PITA) but I dont want to risk any further damage. No warning lights or low oil - just checked them and its not pooring out just noticed a patch on the ground and decided to investigate..

mmmmm had ours flat bedded I personally wouldn't take the risk

JohnR up here drove his back from Sundown NP (100 plus km) then to the dealer the next day with this issue - had Dave (Blknight) with us and he just kept checking oil levels and topping up when required.

They don't leak that much - if you have to drive it just top up your oil first.

BTW - what year is your vehicle?

Does anyone know how difficult this pump is to change in the field?

Think I'll carry a spare on our big trip.

Flatbedded it to MLR - Landy Assist comes in handy just a PITA get to work. All fixed and back on road - they even cleaned the engine nicely.

Yeah I possibly could have driven and checked the oil but it would have been one messy engine bay. Checked the oil levels and knew we hadn't lost much - just did fancy driving in traffic smelling oil on the donk :eek:

No Idea what the cost is 'dm_td5' but I'd consider getting it changed before a long trip - especially in the middle of no where..... I wouldnt think it hard to change its under an hour for a grease monkey to do it... maybe just an expensive bit of kit to have as a spare.




BTW - what year is your vehicle?
Scallops mines (or SWMBO's is an 07) its the one flogged around Cooma and the motor shows last year :D so everything is bedded in now..... 38K on the clock and wouldnt swap it for anything.....

Thanks Rugrat. Cost isn't the issue as much as what can be done on the side of a dusty dirt track. It certainly doesn't look like much work.

Any idea how much oil it initially dropped from the engine when the seal went? (Low to High on the dip stick is 2L)

Apparently it is not necessary to remove the fan to take the serpinetine belt off.

Looking at the engine I agree fan should be ok. That said does anyone know if the fan spanners are the standard Ford kit?

Best guess would be no more than 1/2 ltr - 1ltr. Oil was topped up by dealer - not sure how much. The stick was in the safe range when i checked it before the replacement.
It was not enough to :eek: me.
More that its now 'marked its territory' on the drive....
