... is there a relay for the system and where is it or is ...
Yes

It's inside the dash to the right of the steering column. Or that is where it is on both my '85s

Oh to have a 'intermittant' central locking system, the two l/h side doors of mine don't work, aparently some small blue spring has gone, i have the bits to fix, but looks like a load of work...and i'm not a fan of a load of work.

good luck though..

buy the $50-100 central locking kit from Strathfield or SCA, hook it up to the working actuator, then slave the new actuators to the non-working doors locks.

Worked on my old RRC and old P38A anyways... current P38A orignal central locking working properly. Yay!! knock on wooden surface...

cheers
Paul.

Might be a faulty microswitch in the driver's door actuator. Has been a while since i have had one apart, but if i remember correctly you can adjust the actuator to ensure the switch gets thrown when you lock with the key.
Each actuator has a small 12v motor, a nylon gear (which is prone to strip- cause of most of my door lock problems to date) and a sliding mechanism to pull the actuating rod. The master actuator also has a microswitch that is pressed by the sliding mechanism when you lock with the key. I seem to remember that one of mine had worn so that the switch was not always properly activated, and adjusting it closer to the mechanism solved the problem. The actuators can be prised apart with care for repair and glued back together.
