Hi guys,
Picked up my 85 County last night (3.9 isuzu 4 speed box) and I'm in love already.
Only problem, on the way to work today, the speedo is topping out at 60km/h, but the car was doing at least 80km/h.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I've got a bit of driving to do this weekend, and not real keen on doing the princess highway on double demerits with a speedo reading 60!
Any help wold be great!
Cheers,
Cheyne.

From what I have read about the Isuzu, I would not have thought it was a problem.
If the noise is annoying, that's about 60 km/h.
If it's deafening, that's 80km/h.
If it's unbearable, thats 100km/h.
:p
I had a similar problem on a 20 yr old Camry, but the LR speedo is a different design. In my case, the needle had bent over the years and was touching the glass. When the tacho did the same thing, I pulled them apart, warmed the needles and bent them back into position.
I'm sure that is of no help with your problem.

Now experience sometimes is valuable.
This can happen to an LT95 when the nut on the rear output shaft becomes loose.
The nut tension is all that holds the speedo gear in place.
I had it happen on my 77 RRC.

So how hard is it to tighten the nut? And would the cable need to be lubricated at all?

The fault could be one of 3 things:
A bad drive gear (not likely)
A Worn speedo cable: Unscrew both ends and check that they still have a nice 100' square on each end, not rounded or worn.
or Finally the speedo might be in need of a service, it could have a physical jam or drag inside.
One good test is to time 1km at 60km/h (should be 1 minute) and then take it up to what feels like 100km/h and time that. If the odometer goes faster at 100km/h then the problem is definatly in the speedo itself. If it still takes 1 minute then it is in the drive (either cable or gear box)
I hope this helps :)

Well you drop the rear tailshaft, then take off the brake drum and there it is.
On a scale of 1-10 for Rovers about a 3.
