View Full Version : Help me decide what to do

Ok, so the body of my Rangie is dying a slow death from cancer and the chassis is not much better.
So, that leaves me with some choices. My first idea was to just transfer my running gear into another Rangie. However, i would really like to build something more inline for touring.
So that started me thinking about a Def 130 DCPU.
But do I transfer my running gear into one or just buy a TD5 or 300TDI one. I would really like to keep my gear.
So help me work it out.

I reckon just chuck your gear into another body;)

I didn't vote because you may decide either way but a 130 is the way to go with or without the old running gear:D..........touring wise lots of room

First thing to do is to change your location, otherwise whatever you choose it will go down the same path as your Rangie!

I reckon, just get a 300tdi Defender . As for the RR gear, I'd be inclined to put it in a Series Landy.
Tdi Defender for touring; 4BDT, coiled 109 (or 88) for your midlife crisis.

Ash,
I voted for fitting the 4bd1T(:p) into a 130DC, I can't think of a better touring combination. 35's will fit, BIG travel and decent offset etc is easy. AWESOME handling at speed on horrific roads, it is basically the combination I will eventually end up with...:)
...one day:o

Can you put baby seats in the back seat of a 130 DC? (I can't believe I just asked that)

Sit in a 130 with a kiddy seat behind yours and see how it feels, i think it will change your mind:(. If i could i would go the 130 but for lack of room i will stick with the rangie. Even a D1 is to small for me

don't tel me Roothy & Milo were giving you the run around at rover park so you have given up on a Rangie? Someone earlier suggested a Series Rover with you running gear - everyone loves a coliy series, could not think of anything better :D

Why not chop a RRC into a duel cab on a 130 chassis with the 4bd1. You will miss the comfort and in cab ergonomics of the Rangie if you go 130.:(
I know I would.
I would do this conversion if I had the time but never will sadly:(

I have just been down this path Maggott....
Sold my fully locked and loaded 1986 Rangie for a 1998 130 DPCU 300 TDI just in the last few weeks. I went for a 300 TDI after seeing 5 x TD5's at my mates workshop all with melted pistons and/or warped heads on vehicles with very low kms.
I spent many sleepless nights trying to make a decision on what to do as I needed a ute.
Yes...the 130 is not as comfy as the rangie, but you can go 35 x 12.5's without doing much, just a 2" lift is needed.
They are very agricultural to drive and not as quick as my V8, but maybe the 4BDT might be the way to go if that is the engine you are use to.
Cheers

It can go behind Anna's seat :)

I don't know about that one as I would need to change it to 4.1's and lock it so would be easier to just bolt in my diff.

Not likely, Milo didn't end in 1 piece.

I'm not a big fan of converted wagons into utes. You hardly ever see one thats done well.

I would be moving a lot of the Rangie gear over, like front seats with armrests etc, as well as moving them across and back, and probably a tapered wedge on the top bolts of the pedal box to tilt the pedals down a bit so the hope would be a bit more comfy than a stocker deefer.

I took my 130 HCPU to Moreton Island over easter. It was great. So much more room then my old Rangie. Great having the ute to just throw wet sandy gear into and also great not having to worry about carpet.
So much easier to clean inside after a trip...just take out the mats and hose it out.
The Defender Aircon runs some much more efficiently and effectively compared to the Rangie.
I have 2 boys - one aged 3 and one aged 1. And there is heaps of room in the back for a third child seat "if" that ever happens. There is no way 3 kids seats will fit in the back of a Rangie.
Other plus...fuel economy...my mate in a newish petrol rodeo chewed through fuel. I just used a quarter of a tank over the long weekend.
Cheers

I'm sure you will eventually regret it if you have all the extra weight of a 130 and just a rover rear. Dana 60 4.1's are cheap ex US. Shouldn't end up costing much more than you can get for your old rear end...

Very nice. Gut the D2, put all of the other bits in, use a late D1 dash. Could it pass emissions though?
