View Full Version : CAVITATING POWER STEERING PUMP

Noticed cavitation sound turning into my driveway tonight:(
Checked the PS reservoir, DRY:mad:, then noticed the PS fluid all over the chassis.
So now i need PS fluid, checked the owners manual for specification which listed texaco 33270, thought i would check the site for alternative fluids and see TimNZ had similar problem with what looks to be only a loose hose.
No time to look at or fix tonight as i've heap of things to organize before heading to Albany tomorrow and i still need the PS fluid which i'll pick up at the Albany dealer.Hopefully its as simple as a loose hose:D then no need to send to the dealers.
Have a safe Easter all.

Hi Searover, the hose just came loose of the bottom of the pump on my 110. As for the fluid I couldn't find an off the shelf replacement, I just swiped the remainder of the 1l container off the dealers to keep as a spare.
The part number for the PS fluid is:
STC50519 1ltr Bottle
If you get desperate for some fluid let me know as I still have the remaining half a bottle.
Cheers,
Tim

you can use dex III/IIII or light hydraulic oil in in a pinch.
any oil is better than none in the short term just make sure that when you replace it you bleed and purge all the old oil out.

Its turned out to be quite a common thing with the Puma defenders, along with loose propshaft nuts, loose front sway bars, loose turbo heat sheild bolt, etc....

:eek: I've seen both those already, on the same vehicle. The dealer had told the owner that he must've been giving it hell for the sway bar bolts to have been 'sheared off' like that! More like they weren't done up and no PD done. All the other rear ones were loose aswell. His tailshaft flange was so loose that the park brake drum was flogged out:mad:
This is unacceptable quality control and slackness by LR, and I'm very unimpressed.

Hi JC, if you have someone complaining about an annoying buzz at about 2300rpm check the securing bolts on the turbo heat sheild, this one:

Well confirmed this morning that it's only a loose bottom hose, hopefuly no damage done to The PS pump and will only require a refill of the reservoir and bleed the air out of the system.
Maybe i need to check every nut, bolt and hose connection on this vehicle to be sure.

I'm with Dave, use any DexIII through VI fluid in the short term for top off
From trying to track down this elusive fluid in the past, it looks like an updated Texaco PAS 14315 Cold Climate fluid specified in earlier Defenders and the ACE system.
It's a semi-synthetic with a very high viscosity index, but the specs it meets are pretty standard.
If you can find a fluid the meets the Chrysler and GM specs, it should be totally compatible.

Thanks Rick130, the dealer gave me 2 litres of the VW PAS fluid which he said is what they use.
Don't have the specs with me, will post tonight.
Thanks
