If you have the cash and engineering skills you can fit any engine you like.

failing that, a recon 1.8 might be the best option.

Its a tough car to change engines in. Lots of room, but lots of gadgetry to connect for roadworthy.

What is wrong with the 1.8? Slipped liners, then you are up for a new something most likely. Good liners with damaged head, get the head fixed.

The issue is that there is not enough room to fit a conventional 4x4 system under neath. Therefore you need to keep the IRD, and most likely the gearbox. The gearbox can only take around 250nm? (i cant remember the unit) so therefore its gota be high revving, lower torque. Wich results in 4-6cyl high reving engines. basically where you started.

The only other option is to run a 4/v6 running RWD, but there would be a LOT of work. Hella good fun tho.

Cheers!
