My son and I have just returned from a 10day, 5,000km trip to William Ck in SA for the annual gymkhana. We wanted to go due west from the gold coast through Thargomindah, Innamincka but on consulting the "leading "road service were told road access was limited with closures, fines to apply if found travelling etc. We wanted to return via Wilcannia/Darling River/Bourke etc and were told same thing....impassable, same fines etc so we laboured down the bitumen via adelaide and on meeting locals in William Ck who had travelled across the bottom of Queensland we were told no....there are no roads closed. On our return we optioned to go back via Tibooburra/Noccundra and while sitting in the Family Hotel were told by a guy who had just come up the Darling and across from Bourke that no roads were closed either. Makes you kind of angry that authorities dont really keep their websites and road info properly updated. So next year we are going where we plan and stuff the road services updates. BTW we had a great trip, the disco just made mockery of anywhere we ventured and averaged around 11lts/100k. We travelled with a 100 series cruiser which struggled in some sandhills we ventured into.....the disco didnt even dig in.....next year: if anyone is interested in a fun weekend the annual gymkhana is always held the w/e before easter. I have just become a committee member so if anyone is interested in this event either as a participant/ spectator/sponsor feel free to contact me. all proceeds from this event goto the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
