I have a Zenith here in complete but untested condition. Have you still got the Solex? because i would prefer to have a Solex over the Zenith (Series 1 resto)
cheers

I actually have two solex's...both have the same problem, the top of the venturi post thing with the air jet mounted at the centre of aperture of the throat's intake has crumbled and will not hold the jet that is supposed to screw in there...The central post is simply pressed into the carburettor body...I made one out of an air compressor connector part and it works well but I'm sure it's running way rich because the part I made isn't the exact dimensions as the original part...I had just reconditioned my engine and was desparate to get it going :)

Apart from the above issue, I'm sure you would get one excellent carbie out of the two I have (includes new throttle spindle and recondition kit) and I'm happy to part with them, when I can find a replacement Zenith.

Is your Zenith complete or incomplete?

Cheers, Les 0408890098

As far as i know its complete. I am not really familiar with the Zenith. I will take some piccys and put them up. My other project also runs a Solex so i would like to have interchangeability.

Yes, looks OK. Good pics. I'm happy to buy it and if I get it going ok you can have the Solex bits. Please give me a call when convenient. Thanks Les 0408890098

G'day Les
I am happy just to swap it for one of the Solex's in running order if thats OK for you. The next week is pretty flat strap for me, let me know what you think.
cheers

IMHO the Zenith 36IV is quite a good carby, the only problem I encountered with them, apart from throttle shaft/body wear, was warping between the top section and the main body/float chamber.
This could be detected by running feeler gauges aroung the mating surfaces - the gap was usually found on the side near the linkages.
A new gasket would probably fix the problem for a while but I usually just resurfaced each face using a sheet of fine wet and dry paper on a piece of flat glass and then reassembled using old gasket.

I realise that this in a little off topic but thought you members may be unaware of it and might benefit from it.

Dual Fuel here in Caboolture charge about $250 to completely re-condition the Zenith 36IV.....mine is a beauty....now have to get the box of Zenith carbys out and get another one done up for my other landy:D

I heard that the military used two gaskets between the top and bottom halves. I reckoned that would probably work as the emulsion block, float level and fit of the o'ring are unaffected. I refaced mine using the wet-and-dry on glass, then fitted two gaskets, and it seems to work just fine - I haven't opened it up in about two years. I also adjusted the float level as I found the fuel was sitting well over the o'ring level. I think it's at about 36mm (as opposed to the recommended 33mm) now. A question for the petrochemical engineers: Has the newer petrol a lower density to the old leaded petrol, as a new plastic float displayed the same behaviour?

So I swapped my pair (one spare) of original equipment but leaky, flatspotted solex's for a Zenith 361v (thanks Mick)...did the resurfacing of mating surfaces thing, bit of cleaning and hey presto...a perfect carburettor!!! engine runs sweetly, starts perfectly first time and has no flat spots...adds to the LR driving pleasure :)

One thing to watch out for, make sure the surfaces mate together WITHOUT THE O RING IN PLACE...after resurfacing upper and lower parts I needed to re-do the middle piece to let the surfaces come together properly. The area where the O ring goes was touching, not allowing the gasket surfaces to mate properly but after re-doiing the middle piece...fitted properly. The reason for checking it without the O ring is that the O ring naturally provides resistance to the surfaces coming together however if the don't mate with no o ring they will never mate with it.

Drove it to work today what a difference :)

Just a comment that swapping from Zenith to Solex, the adapter should go with the Zenith. Not sure about the linkage, maybe the last link in the throttle linkage ought to stay with each carburetter as well.

I needed to purchase an adaptor for the Zenith (4wd's in Melbourne $35?)...also had to turn the throttle linkage on the shaft that mounts on the inner guard near the carburettor upside down...I'm sure this isn't the original method, but it works perfectly...I'll keep a look out for the throttle linkage parts from an originially equipped zenith installation...

Fingers crossed the Stromberg on my 2.25 lasts, seems to be going pretty well at them moment. I have a Slolex and Zenith in restorable condition for the future though :p do you have a link to the bloke that restored yours?

Cheers

Petrols vary from batch to batch in density by up to about 10%, depending mainly on the feedstock used, and not on the grade of fuel. As far as I can ascertain though, there is no systematic variation between current fuels and those the carburetter was designed for.

re: do you have a link to the bloke that restored yours?
I did the resurfacing etc myself after reading a thread by someone else on this forum...can't remember the thread sorry...I used 320 grit emery on a plate of glass, I'll go look for the thread.
go to http://www.lrfaq.org/Series/FAQ.S.carb.zenith.fix.html for description of fix

I found some linkages this arvy, I think they might be the ones for a zenith setup.

you're welcom to them.

Dave, Thanks again. I'll call in some time...show you how Hillston now runs :) and check out the linkages... 'nother subject, still working up to doing the 11" brakes conversion...still need a good LWB un-assisted brake master cyl. Cheers Les

set them up on your existing MC, its got enough in it if you get the adjustment right.
