OILY TURBO

Blew an Intercooler hose this morning,300Tdi patched up with aluminium foil and tape, managed to get home. I noticed that the inside of elbow, pipe and the turbo outlet are very oily, not sure what to make of it, does it indicate seals in turbo shot and if so can they be replaced/rebuilt or otherwise any advise will be helpful. Most likely vapourised oil residue from the engine breather which enters the air intake pre turbo on most applications. Unless you are using a fair bit of engine oil (exhaust will probably be smokey blue as well) I would expect it to be from the crankcase/rocker cover breather.

if it was the turbo oil seal it would make itself known by the attempt of your tdis crank RPMs trying to pass those of a rotary.

more than likely its crank case ventilation related.

Normal, tdi has a fair bit of oil circulation through intake etc. The IC is actually supposed to be flushed at the 120K service according to the service sched, you can reduce the oil ingress by fitting a MANN 'provent', search here will give details.
