Someone with a orbital sander or similar has pretty much flattened all the rivets in a bonnet I am fixing up. Can someone tell me what I need tool and hardware wise to replace the rivets when I am ready to put it back together??

There is a tool on e bay (photo below) that looks like it's used with an air chisel, it's already up to $81. I have others I would not mind replacing down both sides of a lwb so would like to get the gear that will give a quality job.

Hmm, that's a neat idea. I would have used a manual rivet set. If I ever need to rivet up some Landy panels, I'll modify one of my air chisel tools.

Would not be difficult. A piece of silver steel, or 4340 if you can acquire some, turn to size and required shape, heat to a dull red and oil quench.

if the 'snap' shown in your pic is all that is selling on ebay, forget it.

ok, just found it,
a/c spruce have similar items for around $35 usd
so it is already too expensive, although it appears to be the correct snap for the round head rivet shown, and he states that, so it may be worth it as the item is local, and this shape isn't used in the aircraft game nowadays, it suits pommy rivets.
normally a new rivet gun will be around $500.00,
i know of a new one with snaps available for that.
however if i was you, i'd pop out to the airport and ask an aircraft engineer.
we don't have the original head style as lr used, but 3/16 rivets are available in the lengths you need, not cheap, about 30 cents each, and normaly the aircraft supply places will sell in 1/4 lb quantities, about 100 rivets.

Silly me - "snap" not "set" - It's been a long time since I've used either.
Actually, the ones we had when I was at tech were a combined snap and set tool.

yep, the snap is used to set the rivet.
but you're forgiven.

Hi,
i've got the tool for doing these solid head alloy rivets.
i have the crimping tool piece that goes into my air hammer & a Bucking bar which you hold on the rivet head to keep its shape. I had to practice a bit to get it right by getting the right air pressure to the air hammer. Ill take some pics of my tool and post it tomorrow.
i bought my tooling and rivets from Big Flat Rivet Co, in USA. Big Flats Rivet Co. - Authentic rivets for vintage cars. (http://www.bigflatsrivet.com/) hence the rivet sizes are different to the UK so i sent an origional to them in the post and they match the head of the rivet, slightly larger but i dont really care the job turned out well in the end.
if you have access to a lathe with a good range of tooling / cutters, you could easily make your own up no problems just make sure the bucking bar, dome surface inside is smooth otherwise it will show on the rivet head.
cheers

G'day All, I have been using a modifed air tool (chisel) for the last 10 years, made all the bitz on my lathe, tis dead easy, no rocket science, would be very different for aircraft though LOL cheers Dennis:angel:

reckon there could be a market for someone with a lathe to make the "snap" and "set" for our fine members:angel:. Air hammers are'nt expensive, especially the chinese ones. I've got one stashed somewhere from my panel beating days.:D
