Well after my rear bar was smashed the other weekend, I've decided to get to it and make my own rear bar. Having looked at other bars, I pretty much had an idea what I wanted it to look like. I wanted to look like the standard bar, but at the same time have good strength and give me better departure angle. I also wanted to keep it as light as possible. I used 2mm gal steel sheet, its easy enough to shape and when "boxed" right and given a good frame on the inside, it should have good strength.
This what I've done so far. I still need to to reinforce the inside of the whole bar, cut the holes for the lights, and grind everything smooth so it looks good. So still a few hours of work left.

I chopped the bottom rear quarters, but only the little rim where the finishing plastic is meant to be. I don't think there's a worse feeling than butchering your pride and joy with an angle grinder, but i must say, it came out OK.

I still have plenty to do, but will hopefully have it all done in the next few days.

So you listened and actually cut some of your quarters away. I'm interested to see what it looks like in the flesh. Looks good so far.

I have finally finished my rear bar!!
For the amount of work and hours that went into it, I am really happy with how it came up. Here are some pics, I apologise for the bad quality, I only had my phone on me. But its better than nothing I suppose.

I will probly put some checker plate on top, just to for some grip to get in and out of the car, and to stop the paint from getting rubbed off.
Next up, are some sliders and some diff guards, can't wait to get started with them.

I reckon slot a bit of black chequer plate between the bar and the side trim on the rear quater to hide that bit of green showing through and it will look even more the goods;)

Nice shed! Big enough for all the forum members :)

I might do the checker plate thing on the sides, still deciding, thanks for the idea. I put some on the back just to stop the paint from rubbing off, sadly i couldn't find any black checkerplate, so the shiny stuff had to suffice.
Yes I do like that shed, the only problem is that is normally takes me twice as long to do something in there, as I'm always looking for tools and not being able to find them. Some major organising needs to be done.

Cut a bit of panel off :eek:
It looks as if you cut of what i did (320mm)
Good looking bar,
Its great not having to worry about the old plastic dragging behind the car any more :D

Hey Baffle
I did cut a bit off, but maybe not as much as you did. I like you you braced your rear bar against the chassis, very good idea. I haven't tested mine out yet, but like you say its much better than the plastic thing that keeps getting ripped off.

Nice work mate! Good idea cutting the rear quarter panels...they always take a crunching if you come down hard enough.

Thanks. Yeah I'd rather cut them than have them scrunched up, which makes cutting harder. McDisco you have a custom rear bar don't you, I think I've seen pics of it but can't seam to find them anywhere.

Here are some better photos taken in daylight. I put some checker plate across the top of the bar, just for more grip. Still deciding whether I want to run it the whole length of the bar or leave it as it is, what do you guys think...?

Mate that looks brilliant, make sure you do the extra bracing, those standard mounts on the D2 are bloody weak as, I still need to do on mine too, I'm bending the brackets way too much now.

I'm not shore if the mounts are the same on a d1 as a d2, but the d1 standard mounts are very flimsy, i wouldn't trust them:eek:
I made up some more solid mounts on my bar:)
By the way the bar looks very well done, like a bought one:cool:

I have some 75mm x 75mm box under the house if you want Lou, cut to the width of my D2, cut the same as this 100mm x 100mm box.

BBQ is good too:D
Yes it was decided it was a tad small, didn't look right or come up far enough.
