View Full Version : Land Rover Jamboree

Jeep have one, why not Land Rover?

I was thinking about organising a Land Rover Jamboree similar to the old 4WD Clubs jamborees that used to be held in NSW.

Who would come? Is it a good idea? How much would people pay for a 3 day weekend per car?

Was thinking June long weekend as an annual event. Would have to start next year as it is too close this year.

Thoughts People?

Good idea Ash.

Blinman has been and gone, Cooma isn't every year...how about an event geared around remote areas? Maybe a meeting at Birdsville and a few day trips to big red and the surrounding areas?

Remote areas may be a little hard to organise due to the amount of pre work that would need to be done but I would love too.

well seeing as you are in hervey bay i would show my face, i think it may well need to be a riegonal thing due to the travel involved but a good idea all the same. i was in the local RS owners club back in the uk we had a meet onece a month for local members so maybe this could work on a quarterly basis ?? i for one would be up for this. i went to inskip at the weekend and past a groupe of 4x4's coming off a trail near raindow and have seen the toyota club down at double island point. it may start small but form little acorns grow big trees. so come on support our fav bread of 4x4 and get a group meet sorted even if it's only to show the other 4bys that the land rover has a good following :BigThumb::BigThumb::BigThumb:

Sounds like a great idea and I'd be interested in attending, depending on time and location.

Last September I attended a similar gathering while I was travelling in Canada. Check out the following site for my report on the weekend.

M.O.R.E. Makes It Into LROC Australia (http://www.maritimerovers.org/smf/index.php'topic=1793.0)

You probably won't be able to read the text of the article as posted so I'll attach the text to this post.

I just thought that it may give you some ideas of what is possible in running such an event.

If not my family has a vacant (apart from shed with amenities) 5 acre block on the cunningham highway at Maryvale which i would happily offer for the cause. Plenty of flat paddock for camping and there is a great pub at maryvale and only a short drive to janowen hills.

I said something like that once and was accused of being racist. I suggested it was not the colour of their skin that worried me but the look in their eyes. If about a hundred drunk white guys looked at me and the missus the way the Wilcannia patrons did as we drove past their pub we still would have kept on driving.

So sad for a town that is so important historically and for a community who seem so desolate.

But back on topic, I like the idea of an event. Lets start a committee!!!!

Great idea Ash.Perhaps an area around mid to nthrn NSW for the first one as that would be accesable by many. Next year could be down near the Vic border etc etc.

A small committee would be a good idea to share the load, made up of on road Vogue owners to full off road modifieds. That way it will have something for everyone.

Have done smaller ones in sydney years ago so PM me if you need some help.

Wilcannia seems to have a bit of a reputation tho...most people drive thu and keep going :(

Pick a smaller town that generally has nothing on...it will help boost their economy once a year

I guess that would be nice if the LR community help small towns ;)
In many cases we can help to place them on the map..... again :D

NM, I was thinking more along the lines of KISS, if it is going to be like Cooma, then I would suggest Cooma as the Venue, a whole bunch of organising though I would think a Mammoth task, maybe it could be split into regional areas and left to regional organisation. July will be very cold in most camping spots, unless your in the tropics, this time of the year or Spring would be more suitable, Regards Frank.

where would you hold it centre of Australia so it's fair travelling time for everyone or would you have it in the eastern states .....always fancied driving into the middle of the dessert to get lost !!!!
In the old country they have these kind of events annually and its best to get land rover on board as well as after market product sellers to make it interesting.
landrover owner international magazine usually have huge input on the u.k. ones maybe they would be interested in covering your event?
might be able to hook up with some food outlets so they in effect would pay for the site.

Excellent idea would be good to have nav run(poker run) event as well as flex up or mud pulls or maybe mud racing if allowed and able, maybe a prize or trophy for each class in the show and dirty.Something for the kids as some of us have them.My pick for a location would maybe up nsw north coast and maybe out towards tamworth way.

hmmmm,,
well it's not going to be a weekend thing,,

no matter which state you decide on its going to be more than one days drive for everyone else.

so if its more than one--
make it somewhere remote for everyone.

within 200ks of Whitecliffs.

makes it available to the SA-Aulroians too,,

I like the part that's highlighted. Say someting like:

2010 - NSW
2011 - SA
2012 - QLD
2013 - VIC
2014 - TAS/WA/NT

and so on. That way every 5th year is the BIG trip and it gives everyone time to save money and organise leave. The eastern states are generally good for long weekends plus say a day or two, whereas TAS/WA/NT are week long trips plus......

And the idea of smallish towns etc is great IMHO.

Something I've noticed is that the kids always miss out. A lot of families are getting around now days - organise an event or two that involves the kids AND parents together. It might help get a few more people there.

One other thing - the first one is always the smallest as the rule. If you make a good event, then it will keep growing throught the years. DON'T be discouraged by the first attempt.

Thats one of the good things about rover park, there is a mini zoo, a flying fox and a giant waterslide (ex wet and wild) for the kids. Also, the mud race on foot will have a kids event as well.

I have helped organise many events in the past and know a bit about it. One of the benefits of using rover park, esp for the first one is it can be run under their Public Liability insurance.

Has anyone thought of a 'circular route' convoy that passes through various states and districts on a predetermined course, one that could be joined and left at the convenience of the participants. Sort of a 'rolling' convoy. For example, a Qlder may wish to travel from Central Qld through the SE Corner of the state and follow the coast to Sydney then on to perhaps Wagga or somewhere and then turn homewards, whilst someone from Brisbane or Coffs may wish to join him though Sydney and continue to Melbourne and Adelaide before returning, and so on ad infinitum.
One could if one wished and was in a position to do so, do a complete circumnavigation whilst others may only be able to join in for a couple of days whilst the convoy (caravan) was relatively local to them.
If the whole thing was organised as a 'travelling' event, with frequent locality stopovers (to coincide with concentrated participant areas), there would be no insurance or outside legalities incurred, just a good old BBQ get together with like minded people in different areas.
Perhaps if the whole thing simply circumnavigated NSW, members from other states would be able to join in and participate when the convoy neared their district. Half the fun would be smaller convoys travelling from concentrated areas to the local get together, eg Sydney convoy to Mudgee for example, Join the circuit to Tumbarumba or somewhere down that way, meet the Victorian convoy from Melbourne, then across to Balranald to see the South Aussie before heading back to Lismore where the Qlders could easily join in before heading back south again.
Sounds confusing I know but it may be worth a thought.
Regards
Glen

tamworth is a great place at festival time. lots of music of all different types, apart from country and western, you'll find blues. rock, country swing, rockabilly, bluegrass.
only rained on me once in 25 yrs, but have to admit, i missed a couple and it did rain a few of those times. the main problem is that it's stinking hot and very little relief from it except inside the clubs, which usually have some dodgy country singer during the day.

If centralisation for travel is important......
If you want a town thats not too big, not too small....
If you want community support for the event......
If you want a town that can lend itself to good 4x4 adventures beyond.....
If you want a place of interest......
If you want a town that could meet any expanding number increases....
THEN....may I suggest BROKEN HILL as the perfect venue for an annual event of this type.
The Broken Hill Racecourse would be the perfect venue (providing the Race Club Committee was in agreement) with all facilities available there.
If the racecourse is not favourable then there is fabulous central venue at their showgrounds which has pavillions etc and one of the local service clubs would probably be interested in catering etc.
Apart from that the little town has great tourist backup with heaps of clubs and pubs.
I've been around a bit and I cannot think of a better venue for a national event such as we are talking about here.
To get there, its all bitumen cruising and from there the dirt options are endless.
And lastly....I'm deadset sure the Broken Hill City Council and its supporting organisations would leap at the opportunity to support this event on an annual basis.

long stroke
25th April 2009, 08:29 AM
Broken hill would be good to, abit closer to people in Perth etc;)
But if your looking for a town that doesn't have these sought of events yearly, broken hill already has the ''outback challenge held there;)
Aparrently it brings alot of money into the town each year;)
2 events can never hert though i spose:)

This is a great idea and we're keen to be there at Rover Park.
I also agree it should be moved around each year, and should be used to boost the economy of a small town.
I thought of Dorrigo as there are tracks all over the eastern Dorrigo to explore, plus lots of touristy stuff and the NPs. But if its NSW next year then it should move to another state the year after. Broken Hill could certainly be good, but there must be other places.
Maybe the time of year could also change depending on the conditions. For instance, inland or north mid-year, south or west in the warmer months.
I was also wondering if a fund-raising cause might also be adopted, to focus the event somehow. Maybe pick a suitable charity with national approval.
What do you think?

Hi All

Have not been around for a while, I finally got the courage up to sell the wife's Disco. But the Landrover bug bit again and I just bought a 2a,it should arrive from Sydney today(CAN'T WAIT:)). I think the get together is a great idea. I had a bit to do with the Landcruiser corroboree at Pamona last year as I was their 4WDQ association rep and it was a great success. Just an idea on a charity if you decide to go that way, what about "careflight", they do a sensational job and I know they had their funding cut back dramatically last year or maybe the "guide dogs". Just a thought?. I will post a few pictures when my new baby arrives, it should be fun having a toy again.

Great idea. I live at Comboyne, if you don't know it its like a smaller version of Dorrigo but a bit small, lower in altitude and further south in b/w Taree and Port Macquarie. When we were looking for properties some years ago we did around 2 Thousand K in two weeks travelling thru state forests etc b/w these two plateaus. You could pretty well travel between the two plateaus thru the forests. The scenerys great, good mountain trails, lots of rainfall, rainforest, volcanic soil, farmland. These areas link the coast with the tablelands. I can definately say that some small towns that are a bit out of the way do it tough economically and are often looking for ways to attract groups to their town. For example a big mountain bike event was held at Comboyne some years ago which was a big boost to the town. Also a lot of these places are not given much gov funding for anything - including roads. Even if AULRO tourers got behind the local community of the town they are in AND RAISED THEIR VOICE it would raise the profile of these issues for the town. Ask the local community what charities they are behind would be one way also. I can tell you guys that there are a lot of farmers doing it tough, getting screwed by the middle men and the retailers while dealing with what nature throws up. It amazes me that so many of these agriculturally productive places get so little back - its all one way traffic to the cities. Land Rovers importance historically to Australian agriculture is a strong link and is probably worth considering in terms of venue for the future - its nice to provide a counter point and remind people that Toyotas did'nt build this country!
I'm rambling now - A Jamboree is a great idea keep it growing.:p

Far out, thats a lovely story. We have neighbours that play music LOUD form time to time and its ok but sometimes it annoys me big time but they are always open to a polite "mate the kids are asleep and I cant, please turn it down".
By the way I had forgotten about Nanna and thanks now I cant forget the torment of my child as my parents played it. :whistling::wallbash:
As for a jamboree I am all for it in Vic or southern NSW somewhere like Wagga or a bit higher.
Cheers
James

WHY does this have to be done on bloody FACEBOOK!
Is there a reason that we LR people can't organise a LR event on a LR forum?

what wardy1 said, I am not registered (and dont intend to be) with Facebook. A Landy event organised on a Landy forum, what a novel idea. It's got my vote.

i'm guessing the reason why this event is not having a lot of coverage on aulro is that the organisor has not logged on since late april

maybe a forum member that is very active on facebook put their hand up to keep us on aulro more informed

maybe incisor could start a section up like we did for the land rover 60th.......i would be hapy to manage the forum i.e moderate but we need either the organisor or somebody to provide the bulk of the info that is being offered on facebook......

And it is being held at Rover Park, Tenterfield, NSW

It is not an exclusive facebook event, it was initially organised here on this forum in THIS THREAD. The facebook thingo is just an offshoot for those members who do have it.

There are more details futher back in this thread as to what will be happening over the weekend which i cannot recall at the moment. Should be good though :D can't wait

It is a very good idea, but I think maybe March/April/May, might have been a bit more suitable maybe.

Hi everyone,

Have not looked at this thread for some months now and to be frank even though I've just read many of the posts I'm still not sure what is happening.

For what it's worth below is some annual weather info for Rover Park, I'd say looking at it the chances are rain is more of a issue then heat. Yes it could be a bit hot in late January but maybe not as hot as you would think. I have been in Tenterfield in Winter on a few occassions and its not a nice place to be and I judge that as a person who lives in Goulburn. :(

Anyway can someone please tell me if this event is happening at Rover Park or not, and if not, then where and when? As if possible I'd like to attend.

From what I can see most people are recommending doing something near where they live, so theres almost 100 different recommendations for dates and venues, this is what happens when there is a good idea but no one to actually take control.

I'm interested in going but unless someone actually wants to organise it (not me) and says 'this is where and when' then chances it will still be being discussed in three months time.

Just to be different I vote we don't go to Goulburn where I live.

cheers,
Terry

*update* OK the cut and paste of the data didn't work to well so here is the link for annual monthly temps, rain etc for Rover Park.

Wilcannia seems to have a bit of a reputation tho...most people drive thu and keep going :(

Pick a smaller town that generally has nothing on...it will help boost their economy once a year

Ahummmmmmm....CABOOLTURE! Yeaaaahhhhhhhh

dobbo
16th November 2009, 10:41 AM
I'd do Caboolture, IMHO Tenterfield has got nothing going for it, probably why it's still for sale. At least Caboolture is central to a few interesting places around it so when I get sick of tossers telling me that I don't have the correct wheels on my vehicle, etc... I can grab the wife and kids and go to one of the zoos, parks or even one of the nearby islands.
