Hi All,
I am the proud owner of a 1986 Rangy Vogue that has the 4 speed ZF auto.
I towed a car on the weekend (problem free, no warning lights or transmission slip evident)...and now my auto is playing up. It changes from 1st to 2nd fine, but then holds second longer than usual and thumps into 3rd and 4th???
Any ideas what could be causing this? I checked the oil level when cold idling and found the level to be at the low end of the stick...but the oil was clean looking. I then checked the oil as per the haymes manual at hot idle and got a normal oil reading?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated as my usual mechanic just told me to roll it off the end of a boat ramp?!...which offended me greatly!
Thanks...i look forward to your wealth of knowledge!
Marcus

G'day Marcus, and welcome to Aulro.
firstly find someone else to work on your vehicle.
secondly, it is a possibilty that the kickdown cable has siezed, this really needs investigation by a trans specialist who knows ZF's.
Where are you located?

Should not the first questions to be asked be-
How many ks does the auto have?
When was the auto last serviced?
It could be that the towing was the straw etc etc.

Thanks for the replies...
excuse my ignorance, but I'm not too sure what the lock up converter is?? When the auto started playing up I immediately mothballed her for fear of doing further damage?
I am located in Brisbane...looks like I will have to get her along to an auto specialist...time for a second mortgage!
While we're on the topic...has anyone ever heard of a celica 5 speed conversion on the range rover? I had an MGB V8 that had this conversion done, but wasnt sure if it would work in the rangy?
Thanks again!

It may not be all that expensive - could be something as simple as solenoids - which is what was wrong with my Falcon gearbox (which is a different gearbox) when I had similar symptoms. Total cost was $400ish.
I have the same ZF gearbox in my BMW and from memory a rebuild costs around $1800-2000.

SOLONOIDS???
What are zees solonoids?
Sounds like a newfangled ninetys thing to me.
ZF 2HP22s do not have solonoids.
If the trans has died of old age there seems to be quite a few 4HP22s from later discos or RRcs around without too many miles and they should be a straight swap.

Yeah my bad. I figured that because everyone else had electronic gearboxes by 1986 that RR would have too

Try MR Automotive in Redcliffe. They will probably put you onto an auto place they use. Bob H
