Hi Steve;
If you have Tools and some mechanical aptitude you can replace the Pads yourself ,just cost you the cost of new Pads , shame you're not local I'd do it free of charge...and then we can go for a Ride on the mountain Bike:D

Once you go to metal its more than just pads. You'll also need to have the rotors replaced or machined. Hopefully its just the wear indicators sounding if your pads have them.

Its not a loud "scrapping" sound. just a very low "scratching" sound. You can even hear it if the radio is on or someone is talking.

Yep, I'd still sort it right now, not because it wont stop, but because its probably about to get expensive.

Depends on the terrain, a worn through pad reduces the friction area and I tend to think increases likelyhood of fade. For legal reasons I wont say that it isn't dangerous - but if it were me and the only option was to drive it into town to get it fixed then that wouldn't worry me as there is still meat on probably 7 out of 8 pads, and the other 90% of the worn pad. I'd be more concerned about scoring the rotor that its grinding on and the cost of fixing that too. If I could get into town by other means then I would check all rotors and pads at home and if ok then replace the front and/or rear pads myself. Do them all in pairs also ie do the same to both fronts and do the same to bothe rears.

Ok back to the original question....how much would you expect just for pads?
and
how much would you expect for a mechanic to change them?

Im doing mine shortly and ordered the bits yesterday.
I was quoted 65-95 per end for pads and rotors from $110ea.
At this stage I'm trying Dba4000 rotors 269ea with Bendix pads 160 per end.

Just replaced my front pads on the 93 Disco 1, used my regular reliable LR supplier ebay. Pads $18 delivery $9 total $27 plus half hour of my time. Bargain ! :D
