Query of Disco II oil leaks????

Hi all!

I have a couple of queries on some oil/fluid leaks on our newly acquired 2000 Disco II TD5 manual. The car is going back to the dealer to have them fixed but, I am wanting to know some of the possible causes so I know the job is done correctly and I am not ripped off. I've had some bad experiences in the past and would usually deal with these myself but, I have a months warranty so why not use it and I currently have a broken hand in a splint for the next month or so.

1) The first leak is engine oil at the bottom of the bell housing where it attaches to the engine.

To me this usually meant the rear crank shaft oil seal requires urgent replacement. I'm I correct in this assumption or is there somewhere else that I should also inspect?

2) The other leak is transmission fluid between the rear of the manual box and the transfer case. This looks to be coming from somewhere higher up than where it is dripping from at the bottom of the joint between the transfer case and gear box.

Also, the dealer had advised that all the fluids/oils had been changed and a full service had been carried by his service department prior to being put on the lot.

Does any one have any ideas or suggestions on these?

Dunno if they are prone to leaking there. Any chance the oil is running down from the rear valley cover seal. See the curved metal clamp in the pic below - try tightening the single bolt on it. There is a rubber seal below it. Note the sealant at each end as well.

The engine oil leak might be diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator, often dripping onto the starter motor if the leak is bad. A new regulator will fix the leak but if the starter is drenched then perhaps that should be removed, dismantled and checked rather than have it fail later on.

The gbox/TC leak will be either the O-ring on the back of the TC intermediate shaft or the TC input shaft oil seal or both. In any case, the TC must be removed and should replace both the O-ring and the i/p shaft seal.

Well,here are my guesses after 10yrs of TD5's.Oil leak on bell housing is usually rocker cover gasket,common problem,or if you are real unlucky rear cam seal,which is a drama.

Other leak is probably double seal between g/box & tran/case.Also common problem.The seals are replaced and surfaces of both boxes covered with sealent before reassembly.This is to stop mud etc getting onto seal at a later date.I have had the double seal repaired by the dealer on all the TD5 i have had under warranty this way & they have never leaked again.

Hopefully whoever does the repair has worked on these vehicles before & knows what they are doing.

It about a 6 to 8 hour job if it your first time to do the gearbox and transfer box seal if you have a look at my posting massive thank last week in discovery fourm there are photos of my tranfer gear box out and you can see the seal on the auto shaft which would not be much different to the manual gear box I have a 2002 disco and have no leaks in ether spots but when I was looking to buy my disco there were plenty that had leak in these spots. It would not be cheap to fix these if you had to pay for it so be carefully.

Just been through the same issue with the oil on the bell housing. Found it to be oil leaking from the rear of the rocker cover gasket where the 'D' is in the gasket. Less common is a leak from the rear cam plug which I been told will need the head removed to fix.

The 2nd leak is most likely the seal between gearbox and the transfer case.

Smell it, taste it... is it diesel?

I just replaced my fuel pressure regulator yesterday. I had diesel leaking down and dripping off my bell housing. I also thought that I had a leak of tranny fluid dripping from the auto transmission sump, but it was the same diesel leak blowing under the disco as I drove, collecting on the transmission and dripping from the drain plug.
