I know this has been flogged to death BUT can somebody tell me??
What are the largest tires I can put on a 86 R/Rover with out them rubbing??

If it is totally original on standard alloy rims then you can only go to 225 75 16 or 235 70 16 with no issues at all. If you adjust the lock stops on the front hubs to stop the tyres rubbing on the radius arms then up to 245 75 16 will fit. Lift it 2 inches and you can get 235 85 16 on with a small cut to the iner arches. if there is any rubbing it wont be by much and easy to trim and not altering the appearance of the vehicle at all.

Which inner guards rub on the 235/85?
I already have bigger bump-stops on the front to clear the big diesel sump.
I currently have 255/65's on the front and yes they rub the radius arms. If they made 235/75 then I'd be there.

To stop them rubbing on the radius arms then adjust the lock stops. Its the bolt on the front of the swivels that holds on part of the disc shield. Its a 5 minute job. The bigger 235 85 16 seem to catch on the rear guard at the bottom of the wheel arch. you can trim them without hacking the guards up its not a major. 285 75 16 I reckon will be near on body lift as well as suspension lift. quite a bit of cutting too

Yes I'm familiar with the adjustable steering stops, but I will probably trade these 255's for something smaller. I not only need clearance for tyres but I need clearance for snow chains around them. I think I'll lose too much steering lock when I allow for 255's with chains.
They do look the part though.:cool:

Yeah the 255s do look good but are a really awkward size. the 245 75 is taller though so might work better but will be still very close the guards.
if you dont mind narrow tires then the 215 85 16 is quite popular on rangies and discos would probably allow room for chains. a couple of my friends run these with very good results.

They are an option. I've just worn out a set of 225/75's and still undecided. I picked up a new set of wheels which came with the 255/65's and 235/70's. So I have some time to decide.
