This bit came off the chassis, held on with 4 screws between the outriggers under the driver's seat. Does anyone know what it is?

Doesn't look like a regular Land Rover bit. Appears to hold a cylinder of some type, perhaps a vacuum accumulator tank for trailer system, but that's a very big guess.
Can you tell us more about the particular vehicle and any optional equipment?

I think my old series 3 diesel had a CAV filter/water separator under there, protected by something similat to that?

G'day All, Fraser, hit the nail on the head thats exactly what it is, usually mounted on the rhs chassis rail (inboard) cheers Dennis:angel:

The bit was attached to a bare 1970 IIa chassis I bought. It was orginally a diesel, so the water filter idea fits perfectly. Now I know I don't have to put it back on during the rebuild.

As long as you can provide technical drawings for the rest of us to copy it from.
