Gday Guys
As normal the pump has a leak have done lots of reading and searching, also downloaded Aces's Vacuum pump repair guide.

But my question is with almost 340k on the clock which is alot of braking mind you should I just replace with a new one?

Ive heard that if they start ticking it needs replacing but to be honest I wouldn't be able able to tell if it was ticking more over the motor:D.

I can get a new one with gasket for $360 and for piece of mind its not really alot of money.

I know there have been plenty of Forum members who have repaired there's, so my question is have you had any problems since you repaired it.Not so much leaking but your brake performance eg harder pedal, softer pedal or just didn't make any difference.

I could always just buy new repair old one to keep as spare.

Anyway just wanted to see what other people's thoughts are espacilly our forum landy mechanics.

Thanx in advance Aaron

Have done in 2 vac pumps on my 300TDI over 760,000 KM. 1st one the cover rivets came loose causing oil leak and later the cover started rattling. Replaced the rivets with bolts and nuts to give a few more KM. Both units eventually had valve jump out into piston chamber and destroy it. due to the fact that i
the pump is for braking, I would renew it.
Regards Chris.

Another one gone...

Yes common prob, annoyingly they can leak horrifically and still work fine:(

I would replace with new, interestingly there are some unbranded ones avail at the moment, I have one return leaking after 18months, WILL NOT be fitting unbranded NON WABCO ones again:mad:

Hi Aaron
Mine has a leak also and I have been advised by a couple of Landy places down here that due to the price of a new one not to bother overhauling the old one.
I also have a very hard pedal so would also be interested to hear if a new unit will change the feel of the pedal.
Cheers, Martin

And when mine went. It was actually cheaper to purchase from the uk then it was for someone to rebuild.
Was also advised against rebuilding

JC, after seeing this thread I was doing a little search, and it appears WABCO isn't that well regarded for QC either.
Have you seen any brand that works better than the OE WABCO ones ?

(and I only worked out today that WABCO is the old Westinghouse Air and Brake Co......:oops2: )

Aaron, that is the non WABCO model, and they are very poor Quality.

my brake pump is also due for replacement AGAIN! It is my second unit and is the genuine wabco. The local supplier says that wabco are notorious for failing but the others brands are worse.

What I want to do is use a more conventional alternator driven pump. In theory it should be fairly straight forward job. I know I will have to do my alternator eventually as its the original one and I have just about done 300k rough kilometers, so it will need a service soon too. This might be good way of sorting them both at once!

Has anyone done this?

Mine went at about 100K, not leaking, just internally cactus (suspect a broken spring).

Luckily I was able to buy a new one in Cooma (at the 60th, packed up about 50km out)

I think mine may have failed gradually over some time. As I am a big lad I think I had just got used to pushing harder on the pedal.

We wnt away with family of 5 and a huge load of stuff in the 130 and camper on the back. I had just thought it was harder to pull up!. it had just been in to an LR specialist for loads of work including brake bleeding and new Pads etc.

Took camper off in bendigo and wife went for a drive, she nearly cleaned up our friends she was following and a few other cars!

I checked the brake booster and pump after coppong abuse when she returned and the pump was stuffed.

where to get one between Christmas and new year in VIC? LR quoted $976 + GST... Oh crap there goes the holiday. Rang around and after much torchure RoverCraft sold me a Wabco for a bargain price and after 40 min to fit the brakes were all better again.

I almost think it worth carrying a spare!

Cheers

Wow $976+GST:o By the time you add GST I could purchase 3 pumps for that price:)....Have two spares

Iam just waiting for my parts to turn up and I double checked after Justins comments that mine was going to be a Wabco before I handed over my Hard Earned cash.

Just replace it, mine has done 270000km now and once i finish at the academy i will be replacing it later in the year, my fix got a couple more years out of it, but its on its last legs now. 340000km is a good run.

Mine had been leaking for a while and I did the fix. When I had the pump apart I noticed one of the valves seemed a bit loose, so I did my best to fix that. After that no more leaks and it worked as well as it had before. However, I probably only got about 10,000k more before suddenly no power braking, the valve had popped out and got chewed up. Pump had done 285,000k.

With this experience I would not bother fixing again I don't think, the valves are not made to be repaired. I replaced with a new WABCO for $400, but having taken one apart I am not that impressed with the design or build. Interestingly enough, I have not noticed any change in the pedal with the new pump.

My few cents worth.

the international 2.8 motor drops the cam driven pump in favour of an alternator vacuum pump, as per every other diesel on the market. This cant be a hard swap. Has anybody done this?

Well the pump that I installed just over 4 years ago crapped itself tonight, all of a sudden I could hear loud tap sounds and then a hard pedal :(. Overall from the research on here I've had a good run with it. But I should confess that I new it was making a unusual tap sound for awhile now but it never effected the braking and it wasn't leaking oil, so I left it alone.

Well they say things happen in three's as I just fixed the injector pump leak last weekend, so what's next :D

If only it was that easy, she is attached to that 110 like it is one of our kids.

One day mate one day I will join the 130 club or 6x6 :D

Wabco never addressed the problem with their pumps. just kept turning them out like before, they have now a bad reputation as nothing was rectified. We now sell an aftermarket one and have no problems.

Currently using an unbranded indian? pump installed early hits year with two gaskets and which is satisfactory so far.....

Unless I've missed it while reading through this thread - nobody else has mentioned the use of 2 or more gaskets when fitting a new one (to reduce the stroke slightly) - a pump life extending tip recommended to me by LR experts and at least one parts retailer in Sydney.

Yep the 2 gasket trick is the go. the supplier who i got my pump off just gave me 2 gaskets without even asking me. I assumed it was the normal thing to do now?

Has been mentioned in other threads about the same topic though. :)
