Just picked up the SVX after her long stay at the dealers. I had taken it in for the first service, to fix the noise in the area around ABS computer and the vibration in the trnsmission. All fixed. Propshaft change has transformed my car completely. No clonking from the transmission anymore. Noise on deceleration in area of ABS was found to be brake pipes not clipped to the firewall. Anyhow, now starting to feel a lot better about the Defender but it has been a hard six or seven months. New front diff, new transfer box, new main box and new propshafts. Nothing left to change.......... I must say that the service department at Barbagallos have been very helpful and have kept me informed all the way through and have admirably put up with my frustrations!

G'day Allan,

I just thought I would say that I am glad you seem to be over your issues - let's hope. Best of luck. I pick up my new SVX in a week or so as long as the few extras I am having fitted have arrived. I am typing this to you from Perth at the moment as I am over here with work.:)

In spite of the factory floor quality issues that accompany the launch of our vehicles it is pleasing that the dealerships are picking up the slack.

The very few problems that I have had have been dealt with promptly and without any agro.

It is reassuring that the "joint responsibility" over the first three years of ownership is taken seriously.

Some of the issues I have had with my SVX were self made! If I had listened to my wife and son and not done a lift kit (2 inch) with ARB, I would not have thought that the transfer box was falling out of the vehicle! I have since read the UK Defender site that states, modified prop shafts should be fitted due to the placement of the Puma gear box. The main gear box was changed because I had a problem with the speed of the syncho's between 1st and 2nd gear. The dealer could not find a problem, but on my insistance, they looked into the issue and finally changed the box. I think, that on reflection, I have been driving Subaru WRX's for too long and have got used to their gear changes. If I take all of this away, I have really not had a bad run. On reflection on my words, I am happy to admit I AM A DEFENDER DRIVER, WITH, OR WITHOUT THE FAULTS!........and should have listened to my wife and left the bloody suspension alone!

Sounds like you've had good service from Barbagallo's... that makes a change, I encountered nothing but frustration when trying to get stuff fixed on the D3.

Did they still honour the factory warranty (for the work on the props) even though you'd modified the vehicle?

Yes but had to change springs back to standard as this was causing the original noise (like a bag of spanners!). Seems Puma's require modified prop shafts to successfully do a lift kit.

That's interesting to hear. Anyway, at least you got to the bottom of the problem and received good service from BBG's. Well done!

Thats very true Allan

And I hate to be a bearer of bad news but this problem had allready been discussed and a member had already had this problem before the SVX was even released.....You should of asked:)

Er, OK, so I'm not aware of this problem with the propshafts and suspension lift. Can anyone enlighten me or just point me to the discussion thread that covers this? Ta!

Ok so from 07 to 09

who has factory fitted double cardon joint on the front propshaft?

We don't but another member said he has seen one on a Puma when he stuck his head under at land rover...so has there been a change somewhere in the years?

I don't have a DC on mine (MY2008). Shafts are both greaseable and with greaseable uni-joints at each end. I'm reading reports on a couple of UK sites of the fitting of a non-greaseable drive shaft as a replacement but haven't seen any mention of DC's on the drive shaft as OEM.

No me either I think he has his wires crossed...
He is finding out from a mate who works at landrover...but I dont have anything in my workshop manual.

Doesn't mean to say they haven't fitted them but I very much doubt it!!!

That was me, and it's definitely a case of me having my wires crossed. I've confirmed it with someone in the LR business.

PUMA Defender does not have a Double Cardan joint on the front propshaft. Sorry about that! :o :angel:

So that's good news because it means that it will not have the sort of propshaft failures that a Discovery II has but the flip side of it is that it's not possible to put a 2" suspension lift without causing driveline vibrations....

dullbird

well it is possible you just have to have a prop made up with double cardons.

I know some TD5 Defender owners have fitted the DII front driveshaft to their lifted vehicles to address the vibration issue. Of course they need to remember to keep greasing it every once in a while...

Obviously not the standard D2 DC joint then as it can't be greased;) ... but it can be destroyed:wasntme:

you can mod them derek to have greese nipples on them....pretty sure thats what discowhite did

yep, just install new uni joints...with nipples:cool:

cheers phil

Yeah, agree re the comment on DC joint - even when rebuilt with greasable uni joints, the DC can still fail if you don't pull out the grease gun every once in a while. More topups required if you do a significant amount of water crossings. The greasable unis just prolong the inevitable.

I think this is more of an issue with the Discovery II V8 due to two factors which may not affect a Defender as much:

1. Airconditioning condensate dripping onto the DC
2. Searing heat radiated from the catalytic converter which will accelerate the drying out of the grease in the unis.

Or maybe it's coz the V8 has more power? :wasntme:
