Defender Seat Extension Rails

Hi all. I have been reading a bit on here about seat extension rails. I also looked up the following...

My question is has any one had these (or similar) fitted in Melbourne by their dealer or specialist Land Rover guys like RangeRov, Ritters etc .

I am not a handyman sorry so don't want to order myself from the UK and then stuff it up on a new car! Also an obvious safety issue also if I do it wrong.:o

Hi SVX37, have you checked out the possibility of simply repositioning the standard runners further back? My 130 extra cab seems to have this done to it although the seat box is not the same as in most Defenders, so it may not be practical in your vehicle.Cheers, 130man.

I think the Mud Seatrails use the same bolt holes as the OE rails - so it's just a matter of unbolting one set and bolting the new ones on.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not a handyman and I am really not that clever to do it myself and don't want to stuff it up. :eek: Just hoping someone has done this before as part of their job...:)

Hi SVX37

I saw these extension rails from NSW 4wd accessories - recreational vehicle conversions - exploz pty.ltd. - australia (http://www.exploz.com.au/accessories.html) on the web and wondered how they worked. I have recently sold my TD5 Defender to friend who is taller than me and he's interested in getting more leg space in the front passenger side. Let me know how you go and if all is good I'll pass the info onto him.

Hey, you don't need some nice shrunk-wrapped product for this... Those mud rails are just glorified spacers. All you need do is raise the seat rails enough to clear the lip of the bulkhead.

There's also no need to worry about safety issues as you're not touching the seatbelt anchor points.

Just get yourself a couple of lengths of 20mm box section and 4x bolts of the same spec as the originals but 20mm longer... Drill a couple of holes in the box section, which line up with the bolt holes and then bolt the seat back into place.

Bingo...

If you want a more deluxe version, you could paint them. :p

Very easy job to do, got mine from Rovacraft here in Perth. Not cheap though but less effort than from the UK. I recon its the best thing I have done to the vehicle, only down side is the veiw out the side windows is very restricted, I am 6'4".

Excellent idea, been thinking about these extension and thought there would be a simple DIY way around it.

I have the seat rails and am contemplating fitting them myself.

My slight concern relates to undoing the bolts on the innermost rail. Will the nuts drop off the underside and into a hard to reach nether region? Or are they held in somehow?

You might want to check the legalities with the ACT authorities. In NSW the VSI6 document by the RMS says that any modification to seat or seat belt anchorages requires certification. I think fitting rails, a spacer, using different and longer bolts all come under this category.
