Hi all

Looks like my 1998 HCPU has a serious oil leak at the transfer case. I just noticed it last night after driving at 100km/hour for 40 mins. I got home and the back axle and diff were covered in oil. This is the first time I have driven at highway speeds since I got it.

When I first got it home after buying it from the previous owner, I noticed that the transfer case oil level was right down so I topped it up. I just put it down to neglect.

Now the leak is coming from the front face of the transfer case where it connects with the gearbox. My guess (after looking at the workshop manual)is that oil is getting past the intermediate shaft seal.

Is this a common problem? I have heard a rumour that the shaft can flog out and elongate the hole in the transfer case.

Thanks
Andrew

Probably close to the most common LR leak.

It's a pretty easy fix, make sure you get new crush tubes and that you don't pinch the O-Ring. I can't see that it would flog out too easily, as the intermediate shaft forces are taken by the bearings which a tensioned by the crush tubes. Allow a day and get a mate to help.

Yes the holes elongate and new o rings often don't last long. Common problem. MR Auto do a swap of your transfer case casing and put your internals back in. Reco case has hardened intermediate shaft surfaces

Thanks all for the reply

I was looking at the case swap idea, so thanks Isuzu110 for the tip.

Cheers
