300tdi big-end replacement...

Just a note to say I have just replaced the big-end bearings after 370,000km.
They were in reasonable condition except for a couple of things.
1. There were small pittings in the bottom shells (due to corrosion no doubt)
2. The shells no longer stuck in the conrod. They fell out easily when I undid the nuts and clung to the crankshaft. Might have something to do with the kms, or the fact I've been running over 20psi boost for the last 12 months...

Didn't take any pics sorry, but the whole job took 4 hours from whoa to go, and cost me about $20 for the shells.

Also, the engine does sound a little quiter now...;)

you should have more oil pressure now to. 20psi bloody hell that is boooosting high. you only paid $20 for the bearings that sounds cheap who made them.

I think they were a Britpart supplier, but the actual shells were made by another firm. Can't remember the brand, sorry.
Also, have cut the boost back to 16psi as I'm going on a mainland trek in a few days towing a camper trailer and dont want to overly stress anything...

It would be interesting to see how much oil pressure the engine have now.
The engine of my Tdi Defender with 105000 km impoved the oil pressure by 100 kpa just only by change the oil to Fuchs Titan 15-40 and Donaldson P550318 filter from Ryco filter and Penrite HPR Diesel 15.
I am under the impression that the Tdi (like many other diesel engines) is very sensitive to the brand of oil and filter.
I will keep using the Donaldson filter in the future
