Wanted: gearbox inspection plate

Hello all,
My 2a is missing an inspection/access plate on the gearbox. It is located on the drivers side, near the top. If you look from the brake/clutch cylinders down towards the transmission, its that cover plate 'down there'. Hope that makes sense, its hard to photograph.

If anyone has one spare, say off a wrecked gearbox, I would appreciate it, I'm happy to spring some $$ towards procurement. Please PM me.

Failing that, I could do with some dimensions so I can bodge a replacement.

Are you sure you mean the gearbox? Might you be thinking of one of the two plates on the transfer case?

hes talking about the timing cover for the series 2/2a varient of the 2.25 its on the adaptor plate and its an engine item not a gearbox item, its easy enough to make one if youve got one to template from or can get in there to tap out the template with gasket card which you can then use to mark out a piece of plate.

I might have one and I'll have a look see while Im cleaning up.

Hi Aaron, you are probably right.
However, I thought the transfer case was aft of the gearbox, under the seatbox more or less?
The panel missing is definately on the engine side of the firewall.

Thanks Dave, you solved it while i was crawling under the bonnet in the dark. Timing cover makes sense.

If you do find one, I would appreciate a lend or buy of it. In the mean time, should I attempt to tape it shut or something to keep the leaves and bugs out?

always a good idea.

the easiest way is to get an icecream container lid. cut it into 2 strips and then cut one of them in half

press that onto the studs that stick out and then drill them with a 3/8th drill.

once youve got that smear some grease onto the housing and put the plastic plate back pull that off and youve got your out line

once youve got your outline cut it out carefully, you can then template one up out of steel or clean up the grease put some light sealastic onto the bit of plastic and put it back.
