Hi there all

I would like to fit an aftermarket temperature guage to the 1954 86" - for those whom have done this before where have you put the sensor probe.

Will the old girl taking a more active roll around the farm, taking into consideration is no spring chicken and wanting to ensure its keeps going.

Thanks in advance

Send Barry2 a PM,he has a temp guage on his '56 series 1,he will be able to tell you how it is fitted.

Wayne, is there not a threaded port in your thermostat housing? This would be one of the better spots to place it.

Aaron.

Hi there Arron

I might have to drill and tap a thread into the housing - or find a new alloy housing.

All the best

Hi Mate
Some housings have extra meat to allow you to drill and tap to fit the sender
in, you have one without the shoulders, it's a no go, the wall is too thin
The other way years ago was to put into a radiator hose, using a clamp on the hose.
There is another way, have a look on a shelf in my shed
cheers

What about one of the ports where the heater pipes would have been? Another way is to put a short section of steel hose mid way in the top radiator hose, and bronze/silver solder a seat into it for the sender unit.

You might have to find one of these ...

I've seen the sensors at super crap auto ..they have many types there for the modern electric temp. gauges.

Dont know what the thread is on the original housing pictured. Is it BSP or BSW ? And which hole is for the optional original gauge temp gauge ..the forward one ?

Hi there

I have never seen one of those typres of housing - but would be ideal for aftermarket guage to be fitted.

All the best

Wayne

PS - been some nice rains over the Flinders Rangers (SA) today - hope others are getting it as well.

Wayne,
My '54 86" has an aftermarket Smiths Temp Guage fitted. The sensor goes into the alloy housing near the thermostat as per attached photo.

Mine was badly corroded in and unfortunately I punctured the ether bulb when trying to remove it:(:( Another job to fix when reassembly gets to that stage.

Cheers,
Chris
