It looks like it'll cost about $180 a year for membership and permits to get VIC red plates for Doc
How does that compare with standard VIC reg?

Not sure about Victoria, but pretty small compared to NSW full rego. But bear in mind that there are very tight restrictions on what you can do with a vehicle on club registration - check exactly what these are before deciding to go that way.

In Qld. you can only drive a vehicle with special interest registration within 15k's of the address of record for purposes of road testing or travel to and from a repairer, or to and from an "authorised event". An authorised event may be one organised by your club, or any other registered club that your club's committee has authorised their members to attend. The event has to authorised at a meeting and recorded in the minutes, and published in the club's newsletter. It is a good idea to carry copies of the minutes and newsletter with you. Plenty of half-smart coppers and pedantic transport inspectors out there who don't like seeing SI Reg. cars being used and love to pick one up for unauthorised travel.
