Just picked up a great condition Detroit soft locker for the rear of my Disco. Just need to line up a more suitable vice and dial indicator and I'll chuck it in. Will get pics during install. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/05/1192.jpg

Nice work. I have a trutrac in the rear of my Rangie. Should only be a couple of hours work going slowly.

Depending on the number of kilometers on them I suggest you replace the carrier bearings during the install.
I had one installed by Kraft many years ago and within a year had to pull it down to replace the carriers.

I did the carrier bearings during my install as a matter of course.
Bearings are cheap, doing the job twice is a pain.

Sounds good, i've been thinking of putting a locker in myself but haven't decided on what. What exactly is a detroit soft locker?

Break a axle with a detroit and you break the detroit as well.
Unless the standard axles are bullet proof ......up grade.

maybe I have got the name wrong!
But there is an american brand also that sells axles just as strong as maxi and I believe they are cheaper...
It's not the ones rover track sells (well it might be)
As these guys had there own website and they make axles for just about everything inc landrover.. I found the website when I was looking for other competitors when doing my maxi research on the net.
Edit: sorry it was long fields and although I was sure they did something for landrovers they don't unless it was a case that they did and now they don't any way sorry for the mess up

Pretty good to deal with and made HD axles last time i spoke to them. Have purchased 4 sets of 4.11 gears from them. Used to work closely with Mal (MaxiDrive) as his US supplier. I have not personal experience with his axles though.

is there a big difference in price between fitting a detroit locker or just going the arb option?
my 2nd rear standard dif is on its way out in my d2 and im debating which way to go atm. i like the idea of being able to flick a switch and lock the rear in, but would an autolocker/LSD effect its on road manners that much?
thanks didnt mean to hijack your thread champ

After having my rear detroit locker in for about 6months or so, the observations I have made so far are that there is a noticeable increase in backlash, and that IF I neglect to check and maintain even tyre pressures on the rear L and R then the steering gets a bit hairy and there is every now and then a 'click' from the rear.
I wouldn't trade it for quids off road though. I haven't experienced any of the 'negative' effects yet, and it has seen its fair share of mud and rocks etc.
Very happy with its simplicity and with the Maxi axles aswell I have a pretty tough rear end now.
