Interesting.

Notice the tread on the tyres in the second and third illustrations.

I wonder if they were really available like that.

Yes they were, described in the owner's hanbook as:

Dunlop 7.00 x 16" Trakgrip T25 "...to obtain maximum wheel grip and driving power when operating over soft mud, ploughland and all unprepared surfaces."

I have in front of me a neat little book my neighbour loaned me.

Advertising Land-Rover series I & II 1948-1971
Compiled by Daniel Young

Has those ads and more in an A4 sized paperbak almost 10mm thick.

very cheap ones here:

Very similar to the Dunlop RoadTrak that I had on my Series 1 and Series 2 in the early sixties. Largely replaced by the RTM by the mid sixties.

Basically a tractor tyre on the land rover rim.;) I've seen a photograph of an early Land Rover with those tyres on a farm. im pretty sure it was from that Book by James Taylor. it had a brown cover. someone showed me this book once and its a very nice book too!

The brown dust cover is "The Landrover", Graham Robson. And I quickly found what must be the picture you refer to. And the tyre tread pattern is exactly the same as the Dunlop Roadtrak I referred to, even closer than the drawing.

I don't know about the UK, which seems to be where the ad is talking about, but in Australia it would have been more than my father made in 1948 - and he would have been probably a little above average income. I started on pretty much average income only about 50% higher than this in 1962, and that was after severe inflation in the early 1950s.

If it is in Britain, as I expect it is, the Australian pound was worth about 20% less than sterling, and the average income in the UK was even lower than implied by this, so at a rough guess, it represents at least one and a half year's average income.
