anti virus programs

At present I am running AVG free and it is doing a good job. However I am suspecting that it is slowing the beast down, particularly on boot up. Is there any other FREE anti virus programs out there that will do the job without affecting computer speed. Jim

Mate free and good.......you are pushing.
Get NOD32 is awesome and cost me $90 for 2 years updating all the time. Some times 6 times a day.
You will never have problems again ;)

Try Avira Antivir Personal.It is free,does a great job and gets good reviews on the internet.

John's suggestion is definitely worth considering.

Unless you have need to run very specialised programs that don't have a free, open source equivalent, some form of Linux would be a simple solution to your problem.

Recent distros (versions) of Linux have become very easy to use. The range of programs available is impressive.

If all you do is word processing, spreadsheets, browsing the web, sending emails, playing music, watching videos, manipulating and storing photos, programming, recording genealogical data, creating graphics ,and a few dozen other common tasks, then something like Ubuntu will do the job at least as well and as easily as Windows.

The bad news is that if you are one of those people who think that computers are for playing games, you are pretty much stuck with Windows. :p

Why do you think AVG is the problem. It has a good reputation for not slowing computers down so maybe there is another explanation. If you are using windows XP, Look around for a download known as BootVis (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BootVis) and for some instructions on how to use it.

Bootvis will time and report each step of the boot process. You will be able to find which step in the process is taking the longest time. You may then be able to address that.

Note - it will not work under Vista.

I take it you mean in the first few minutes after boot up ??
AVG free is set to do a scan straight after bootup, which will slow the PC down for a while and can be a pain in the neck. You can go into the settings of AVG free and change this though.
Nothing wrong with AVG free, it does its job well

NOD32 Will solve all your problems
I have run tests on the freebies and a large number of viruses get through them.
Avast is probably the best of the freebies but isnt has good as NOD32.

Been using Avast for a few years and my pc has never been more stable/clean, even when i have downloaded a file and the virus alert goes off i have never had any issues.
