View Full Version : Fuel breather location on 07+ defenders

I was just reading DullBird's thread on water in the fuel, and thought I'd better go and see if I could find my fuel breather (2007 110).

Also I recall a post on the newer models having a repositioned breather (behind a panel now, or something) following a spate of water in fuel occurrences in the UK.

I have had a crawl around underneath my car and checked out the filler area etc but can't find any protuding tube that might ingest water.

Where should I be looking for this? Anyone got a picture of the 'incorrect' location, so that I can relocate it myself?

Thanks
David

It should be a 6mm diameter black tube ending in a U-bend somewhere around the chassis ail on the driver's side between the spring and the fuel filter. I extended mine before I did anything else to the vehicle on advice from Sutton Motors in Alice. I fitted an extension of tubing on to it and ran this up behind the indicator on the driver's side rear. Also do your rear diff breather as it is fairly short too.

Hmmm, you may be right:confused: It's been 9 months since I fitted it and I'd have to go have another look. Either way its a black piece of tubing that goes nowhere and comes from the top of the tank.

OK - I will look on both sides then. It is too dark ATM so I'll check it out in the morning.

I was expecting to see it on the fuel filler side for some reason, so I didn;t even look on the passenger side.

I have repositioned all the breathers on the Puma 130's I have as customers,(Only 2 so far:p) up to behind the cab attached to the cab guard, with a Small plastic fuel filter on the end.

Just for the record:

Mine is the later version that came with the pipe on the driver's side...above the chassis rail. Not much of an improvement if at all.

It was then relocated by the installer when the 45l auxilliary tank was fitted in the rear guard. It now sits higher on top of the new tank high up in the guard. I'm not planning to go deeper than that and so far it seems to be out of the way of wheel spray.

Here is a link to the what I believe was the very early fuel pipe on the TDCI
my feb 2008 one had a simliar one to my old td5 which extended over to the left hand back wheel arch, curved up under the back inside panel and had some type of non return valve in it, I extended and raised to the height of the snorkel anyway

Well, I found it on the passenger side of course.

It is right in line to pick up any spray coming off of the wheel. Can't believe they didn't think of that when they originally put it there.

Couldn't work out how to get the clip off (I wanted to put it on the other side of the panel it is clipped to) so I have just extended it by about 300mm and poked the end out of the way of the water spray from the rear wheel. That should do the job.

The official "fix" for breathers located in this position is to unclip the tube and shove it under the black plastic plate that covers the passenger side rear lights (from the inside of the wheel arch) - accessed from under the rear passenger wheel arch. I placed mine there in Alice Springs and have hardly had any crap in the fuel filter since.

Alright. Thanks for the info. I'll go and re-route it.
