View Full Version : Fitting a Mantec snorkel to 07+ defender - Where does the seal go?

Am about to fit my Mantec "new plastic jobby" snorkel to my Puma 110, but the instructions leave a lot to be desired, as there are literally about 6 words on the whole sheet and the pictures are too small to see properly.

So - to bolt the snorkel onto the existing air intake hole in the bodywork:
I have a steel frame "gasket" bit and a black neoprene seal, but I can't work out if the seal goes between the body and the steel "gasket" thing, or between the snorkel body and the gasket thing.

Anybody fitted one and got a good answer to this?

Thanks
David

David,

On Defender2.net in the gallery section is a pictorial "how to". Follow this as it makes it dead easy, that's how I did mine.

Just tried to post a link and the Gallery section is down. PM me your e-mail and I can send you a PDF of the information. It's about 4MB.

Cheers

PM sent.

I have just been over at Defender2.net looking for that tutorial, because I remember a bloke called AndrewS posted up a few pictures, but buggered if I can find his post!!

Anyway, I am currently stopped trying to figure out how to pull out the original plastic "cover" on the air intake. Does it just pull out? I can see some fasteners on the back of the tube, but am hoping with some gentle prising, it will pop out.

Use a flat plastic blade (so it doesn't scratch anything) and gently pry all 4 sides and it will pop off.

Got the PDF. It is excellent.

Why can't Mantec come up with something like that.....

Much appreciated.

I think that is what everyone who has fitted one has probably said!

The PDF is the pictures from AndrewS' tutorial on Defender2.net I downloaded them and put them into a file for easy access as a mate needed a copy to fit his RAI.

do you know if they are waterproof and suitable for deep wading? I was looking around the Mantec site earlier (looking for installation instructions) and I saw they sell a wading kit for the New Defender. Is this something else that adds on to the basic snorkel?

Have you ever had yours in deep water?

I have done any distance more than about 20m through water above tyre height yet so I can't answer that. I have done a number of short in and out of creeks and washouts that have been a little higher with no problems.

Hi going to do a few river tripsin the winter here so fitting a wading kit like in my old td5 to diffs, gearbox, transfer box and also raising the fuel breather to the same hieght by running it forward with the rest of the pipes up to the height of the snorkel (when it arrives from the UK!!), I had my old td5 ECU compartment box sealed completly with a breather pipeto the height of the roof, no problems, still debating whether to do this while I have a warranty, they look for excuses to shut you out of a warranty here, will work with specialtly shop her who are active 4WD and will figure it out

New snorkel all fitted. It looks schmick!! Pretty easy job. Took less than an hour.

Thanks again to Derek for his PDF. Sooooo much easier when you can see how it is supposed to go together instead of guessing.

Good to see some qulity chat about Land Rovers:
I have a new Defender and a 1956 S1 out here in WA - BHP shipped them for me when I emigrated from the UK which was nice of them.
I've done some kitting out of the Defender with Mantec snorkel and John Craddock protection kits and now I'm after a wheel carrier as these corrugations do shake the rear door a little.
Mantec seem to be the best based on reviews so I was wondering if there is an Oz supplier of these.
John Craddock in the UK have been excellent for parts and accessories so far but shipping is always a painful add on.
Has anyone any experience with LandRover Tuning over in Victoria? (Or NSW). The website seems to have a lot of pretty cool stuff!
Thanks
