Im fleecing my ladder from my 95 D1 to stick on my 02 D2 preparing for the D1 to go on sale (dont need 2 4WDs and the lass wants a small zippy machine). The allen bolts go into threaded inserts...does anyone know if you can buy them or do I have to open up the inside of the door and retrieve them?
Cheers

yes you can buy them, they are called "rivnuts". They are installed once and thats it, so no retrieving.
Example here on EBay (aus)
RivNuts Nutserts M6 Zinc Plated Steel Polynut Bag of 20 - eBay Other Hand Tools, Hand Tools, Tools, Home. (end time 13-May-09 20:25:43 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RivNuts-Nutserts-M6-Zinc-Plated-Steel-Polynut-Bag-of-20_W0QQitemZ350197563101QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Hand _Tools?hash=item350197563101&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C 301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50)
You can get a proper tool, its like a pair of "pop" rivet pliers,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/METRIC-RIVNUT-RIVET-NUTSERT-TOOL-KIT-COMPL-w-NUTSERTS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el 1177QQhashZitem350194840667QQitemZ350194840667QQpt ZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools
but they are not that cheap, you can use a bolt and piece of flat bar to install them as well.
