About a month ago, I had an oil leak around the transfer case and the place I brought it to replaced the input seals on my 03 td3 auto. Cost me some dollars. It didn't fix the leak. I brought it back and they replaced o rings (intermediate shaft). They also charged me some dollars similar to when they replaced the input shaft. My question is, should I have paid for the labour of them getting the transfer case off to do the job. I feel as though I have been stung!:(

In my opinion you should have only had to pay for the job once.

Was the repair place a Land Rover expert? If so they should have known to do the o rings while the transfer case was out.

Yep. It was done by a Land Rover workshop. Not going to mention names though. Even charged again for the input seals. Not going back there, learnt my lesson. I should have kicked up a stink but its not in me to do that.

1... replaced the input seals on my 03 td3 auto.

2 ... I brought it back and they replaced o rings (intermediate shaft).

should I have paid for the labour of them getting the transfer case off to do the job.

My Question to you is .... Were both sets of "10c seals" right in front of them ..... when they took out the box the first time ????

What I do know is that when the transfer case is off, it doesn't look that hard to me to change and the o rings are about $4 each.

Not too sure what you mean.

If the request to a "Dedicated LandRover Mechanic" .... was to stop the oil leak .... and both sets of seals were staring them in the face, after / during the removal of the T/C .... Then I can only agree with BigJon comments

I requested them to fix the leak when I first brought it in and the two options they gave me were the input or output seals. No mention of the o rings. And when I brought it back the second time thats when they said it could be the o ring. And yes, when I saw another transfer case on the bench and the mechanic showed me where he thought it was leaking from, it was fairly obvious. What I dont get is why not replace the o rings while the TC is out and also replace the input and output seals for the sake of it. Its not that much dollars in parts extra parts.

They are not good tradesman or the Service Manager is not doing his job properly.

When I worked at the Dealer, if a transfer case was out then the O rings and input seal were replaced. Regardless of whether they were leaking or not and regardless as to why the transfer was out.

For example, if a transfer case was removed to then remove the gearbox for clutch replacement, the seals and O rings were replaced.

The seals and O rings are CHEAP. Labour is EXPENSIVE.

It just doesn't make any sort of sense to go to all the effort of pulling the transfer case and not doing the job properly.

Go and get half your money back, they have ripped you off blind.

Good news. I spoke to the repairer this morning regarding this issue and we have come to an agreement which I am very happy with. Thankyou for your replies. And thankyou to the repairer too.

Good to hear.
I would not have been happy in that situation.
