View Full Version : Where do you keep your PUMA

Leading on from my other post just out of curiosity would like to know where you keep your puma over night.

And I'm doing this for a reason guys, to try and narrow things down so those Who don't own a puma please don't vote.:) no offence:p

You've seen our "under cover" storage:(

Ours doesn't get too cold but it does get incredibly wet and sunburnt:eek:

Should we be using SPF 30+ on the Puma:confused:

I won't mention that we are lucky if we get one night a year that the temperature actually plummets to below 15C for a brief period. Stuuu can jump in here...

interesting as I have asked Ian to log the temperatures at which the car does do it and doesn't do it via the scan gauge.....So far it does it from 10 degrees to 20 degrees might be worth just seeing if there is a pattern or not

Lou, I think this could well be worth doing. Also, if you can, log the engine and fuel temps too.

Are you looking for peculiar things that happen to your engine in cold/wet conditions?

Ours is kept in a garage, but in winter it can get down to -5 and -6 overnight, so even in the garage it will be around zero I'd guess.

That's probably our plan too....:) a nice 2010/11 110 Double cab

Good luck getting it sorted DB.

Yes, I must say DB, wan't trying to sound like a smartarse. I've only driven one Puma and it was lovely. It just annoys me that Land Rover seem to have a track record of bugs in new models. (The Td5 had a bad reputation in early days too.)

yes we are only difference with a garage is it doesn't get wet/damp..Just gets cold. If you look at my other thread landrover had a lot of trouble getting the rattle, took them over a year to hear it. The difference! we keep the car outside they keep it inside...So I have decided to try and keep a log.

And was curious at how many people keep there puma's undercover...as up until now we were the only ones with this issue.
Now if you think of the uk it gets VERY cold and wet there much more so than here....whether or not its a link, a lot of them on defender 2 were complaining of rough running cars until they fitted the blank off on the egr. the down side was they had to drive around with engine warning lights on. I'm not saying I want to blank the EGR but I'm also not going to dismiss there problems as it could be a lead to something

Mine's in a carport - gets very cold at our place. I warm the engine for 3-4 minutes before driving. I then take it very easy until the temp gauge comes up. I have non of the symptoms you describe.

I hope you can sort this issue out, dullbird. As I mentioned before - if LRA are unable to fix it - maybe someone competent can - like Graeme Cooper.

So how cold is cold at your place....

Well I have a shed but it is still full of unpacked goods from the move and a Model A Ford so the English Mistress sits outside exposed to the weather.

She had the stutters (sounded like teeth chattering) once on a cold morning about 200 m from home.... loss of power and the engine light came on and then after about 20 seconds she returned to normal apart from the engine light. Two fuel sensors were replaced (pressure and mixture if I recall correctly). No recurrence since....wood touched.

Hasn't happened yet but in winter it gets below freezing. At the moment, it is 4-5 degrees.

mahn this is exactly how ours started and has gotten progressively worse we have had the common rail pressure valve changed twice I think, injectors done and some other sensor done and various other things....every time something gets changed it goes away for a short while then comes back...we haven't had it for a while but as soon as the cold weather came back BANG it's back again......

Another interesting link in the temp thing is when we did our kakadu trip the day befoer we left the car rattled and gave the engine light after that the car never missed a heartbeat the whole way around UNTIL we hit victoria with the cold and dewy mornings the engine rattle had come back again.

Beat me to it!

I was going to suggest "back at the dealer" as another poll option. :p

Allan

I think so. Perhaps we should all roll up to the dealers at the same time, same station and let them know how bad things are. My son is in Subaru parts supply in WA and is in disbelief at what I have as warrenty. My daughter in-law is driving a bomb Subaru Outback that has done 29000 kms and drives better than my SVX at 6500km. Its a very disheartening situation. With all the extras that my wife and I have put on this vehicle we have spent $95000. Its wrong!

Mine's always outside in a drive way and occasionally out front on the street if we've moved cars around and I haven't put it back.

Overnight minimums are currently 8-9 degrees where I live in Adelaide.
I usually crank the Puma over about 7:30am each day when its pretty close to the minimum temp.

Start it up, drive it off...no warm up. Although I never go above 2500rpm and usually only reach that when changing from 1st to 2nd.

Hums along most of the time at 2000 or below.

However I did read in the manual yesterday that you are supposed to wait until the glow plug light goes off before cranking so I have started doing that now although I never did in the Td5.

Hope you solve the problem soon.

Cheers
Mark

we hit victoria with the cold and dewy mornings the engine rattle had come back.

Thats how ours is doing (going into the stealers tomorrow for a check over).
Cold morning - may or may not have been damp, and generally between 2nd and 3rd gear changes - could be 50mtrs down the road or 500 - never any further. Engine light goes on and the car runs like a chaff cutter. Has happened 3 times and each time have turned it off - waited 25-30minutes - started it and it runs beautifully. Have had the RACV and Dealer look at it - going in again to be checked. Why wait the 30 mins - because thats the time it takes for a flatbed to get out to us at a minimum.
Its stored outside overnight so the temp can vary from - figures to 16. Only happens when it a COLD morning but then not every cold morning....though we are fairly close to the coast also so the temp fluctuates a fair bit.

Honestly I can't believe this we have had this problem for over a year and now others have got it....I'm not happy you guys have got the problem but because we were the only ones with the issue it was making us look like lyres every time we took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't hear anything...

I'm SOOOOOOO pleased we are not alone any more.

The way you have described it is EXCATLY WHAT WE HAD and happens in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY!!.......Yeah after 18months we now have two cars display the exact same characteristics and what appears kept in the same conditions! what year is yours?

This has happened to me twice in my 08 Puma. I live in Fremantle and had it first occur in March (quite warm) and the second time May down in Yallingup... generally cleared itself in about 30sec... 2nd - 3rd gear and 500m down the track is similar to my experience... but thinking about it last winter / spring was OK...

I regularly visit Pradopoint.com and I have noticed a very similar problem to the one you are describing is happening to the D4D diesel motors in the Prado, look here

sound like a common problem in the latest diesel motors using Australian diesel. Not sure if this is happening O/S as the D4D motor was released quite a while O/S before Australia

.... loss of power and the engine light came on and then after about 20 seconds she returned to normal apart from the engine light.

Question to all that have had this... Have you continued to drive with the light on or do you stop?
The engine does return to normal pretty quickly but the light doesnt disappear until (in our case) we turn the engine off. Seems to be a 30 minute reset cycle as you can start it 10 minutes or 25 minutes later with the warning light still on - 30 minutes and its gone.
Personally - when the chaff cutter kicks in we pull over and kill the engine -Only once has it happened where I 'felt / sensed' the engine clatter so took the car out of gear and reved the engine- the clatter disappeared and the light stayed off. Took all of 30 seconds but its the only time it hasn't kicked in. If anything is found today - I'll post it.
Have - like Scallops -prewarmed the engine on days of ice/frost to prevent the issue - and it seems to work but as its so intermittent - who knows...:(

this post has been put up before it has similarities but its not the same! there knocking comes from start up, the way I read it is they turn the eninge ove and the knocking is evident.....where as ours comes on about 500 meters up the road and only for 30sec and often put the car into limp mode

Ok consensus of the Mechanics is that the EGR is faulty.... so 2 weeks for a part from the mother land and we see where we go next :) Must have shown up on the diagnostics - NFI - didnt get to talk to them when the car was collected... but at least there was no - 'can't replicate it.....'
