View Full Version : Fitted Sahara Bar - I need to Confess....

Well yesterday I fitted the D2a sahara bar to my 01 D2, all went pretty much to plan, and not as much trimming required as thought, very little in fact.

I do however have a confession to make, I'm not sure whether I want the bull bar on there..............Not sure If I like it.:(

I will post up picks when I get a chance to photo the car in the daylight. Am I being crazy? It has certainly changed the dynamics of the car now being so front end heavy, and the 2 inch lift is no longer a consideration, it's a must have.

Being that the 4wding I will do will be pretty average stuff, do I really need a bar? I know it gives me more front clearance and opens things up for tow points but not sure if the extra weight is worth it.

My thoughts as of today are to put the bumper back on, get a tow point made up to go through the opening in the factory bumper bar and get a lift. As now I seem to keep having to spend money on it each time I do a mod. The winch now needs to be wired up, will need a dual battery, need to get the indicators and have them wired up and so on. So when I put a lift in will need to get the front CV joint redone as it's a prevenatative thing obviously with the lift. At what point do I stop pouring money into it.

Also interested in those with a bar, did you put the inside wheel arch covers back in? I will need to cut mine as they are too long or do you just leave them out. I am worried that this exposes the washer bottle etc, to the elements.

As you can tell I am in two confused mindsets with the bar, Someone set me straight!

Mate Sahara bar are the dogs bollocks! you take it off your a NUT I love them and think its one of the nicest bars ARB ever made.

Get your 2" lift on gets some nice chunky tyres and you wont look back.
what colour is your car? maybe you need it black or colour coded...wasn't the bar grey?

Ignore DB, she's just trying to make you feel better.

I'll come down & give you a hand to take it off & refit the original bar.
To show what a decent guy I am, I'll give you a genuine nudge bar & take away the ARB bar for you. How good is that !!

Its a personal thing. You may grow to love it, or you may decide that you don't want it any more.

It's like a beard... some people hate them, some people love them...

However, if you do decide that you really don't like the bar, and just have to get rid of it, let me be first in line to take it off your hands... :D

Hi DB, Wheels wise I am running P38 rims with Maxxis Bighorns, love them!

Car is that sandy gold colour, bar is a dark grey, colour wise it's fine, it's more the weight, the winch which I don't think I will use alot, and the fact that I did like the look of the standard front, had the foggies inset in the bar etc.

I obviously need to get some pics up.

When i put my bar on it changed the whole look of my D2a too:o. My wife was dissapointed, said it was starting to look like a "bush basher":D. Yay! Installed the 2" lift and went wheelin:twisted:. Besides its MY car anyway:wasntme:. So i think that you just need to get used to it. As for the winch, why fit one and lug it around 24/7 if it isn't warranted, just get a good hand winch and throw it in when you need it and leave it in the garage the rest of the time. As for the dual batt, if you install the winch wire it off the main.

I much prefer our D2a with the sahara bar on. You'll need to trim and install the inner guards because (as you said) it leaves the washer bottle very open to damage (but not until you're sure you're gonna leave the bar on there). Painting it will make a difference too. The colour you describe looks great with a colour coded bar in my opinion, where as ours is monte carlo blue and I prefered it black to go witht the other trims on the disco. Just my personal opinion. Good luck.

Matt.

Pics attached, interested in feedback and thoughts.

I am warming to it, but the weight is a killer.

Booked in for a 2 inch lift 1st June (thanks Simon for the Info).

It looks crap, in fact even worse than I first envisaged.

However, I am a man of my word & will stick by my original offer.

whats wrong with that?

I think the probelm is your looking at a bar with no antenna on it no indicators and no spot lights at the moment it looks like a blob of grey......once your indicators and stuff go on then stand back and have another look.....I would be tempted to colour code it myself or put it to black

I actually like the look of it, well done Jaybee.
What brand tyres are you running, are they 265/75.

:BigThumb: 245/75 Bighorns on P38 rims. tried to find a happy medium with the tyre didn't want to go too big, as I wanted to have the option of driving with them daily so 245 seemed about right.

JB, you are absolutely right! It looks pants at the mo, on stock suspension and tyres. I reckon tho, once u get a 2" lift it will be an A-Team moment.....
when a plan comes together.

Even a stock bumper looks good on a lifted truck, yours will be hormone jangling stuff. So fear not, I would give my left testicle to have a sahara bar onboard. Enjoy it.

Im looking at a bar and my thoughts so far,
*the sahara bar looks good but no side/ corner protection at the headlights
*the deluxe offers the best protection but weighs???( I have standard suspension etc.)
* Ive never needed a winch and dont intend going anywhere likely to need one either, ( Im a sandlover)
* now thinking alloy black powder coated (ECB are 6mm high tensile alloy and only 35kg)
* still thinking.

Now while I do like the look of the Sahara Bar, I'd take TJM bar anyday as it has headlight protection and personally I think it looks better than the ARB Deluxe.

Thanks Nick,

It's growing on me and as DB mentioned once I fill those holes it will look complete. The one thing I do feel is that the car looks like it means business, not a city cruiser. I think it's the shock though of continually throwing money at it as well. I cannot help myself until I get the car the way I want it.

I gave up motor racing to save money............................................. :(

Lift booked in for June 1st
