My 'flight of fancy' predictions:

The 110 station wagon will still sell best.
110 dual cab will be second best.
130 single cab chassis and dual cab HCPU approx equal in third.
110 HCPU fifth.
the rest...strictly limited numbers for enthusiasts or specialist uses.

If the 90 was in the list at around $38k, with soft top and roll cage ala SVX (but without the extra price tag and ugly front) i'd put it up with the 110 dual cab for sales, it'd eat into the jeep wrangler market easily, though still more expensive. But that isn't going to happen considering the price last time the 90s were available here!
Cheers,
Mark

The announcement appears to hint that they have some intentions to compete seriously in the real working four wheel drive market. If they really take this on, you could expect to see the 130 cab/chassis as the top seller (fitted with a dropside tray). Failing effective promotion in this area I expect the top seller will remain the 110 wagon.

So why now (Land Rover Australia) and not in 2007 when the Puma was released?

It's almost mid 2009, the Defender in the UK will have to have a front end facelift very soon to comply with the 2010 European Union pedestrian friendlier impact legislation.

The sceptic in me thinks they've been sold a few cheap Defender variants to 'get rid of' before the facelifted model arrives.

Time will tell...

I think its because me and Ian have done a fair bit of testing the PUMA for them with our 2007 model in Australia so now they can bring over the whole model range on the previso that they are not yet able to fix them :lol2:

Only kidding.........Tata I believe are not doing so great I think they are running out of money whether its land rovers division or not I don't know but I read they had asked for money from the uk government maybe that has something to do with it.

Perhaps TATA is just more keen to shift Defenders than Ford ever were and see the possibility of some more market share in Australia being possible.

Remember Jeep was giving Toyota some trouble with the J10 range in the eighties before they pulled from the market. There were a couple of big Toyota users in the mining industry who had signed on just as the factory closed.

I think 3toews is 100% right, Tata is far more interested in selling the defender range successfully than ford or BMW were. they were both only interested in the premium market.

If they do some work I think they can win back some market share from the patrol and landcruiser.

I would love to see it happen, but how on earth can they hope to penetrate the "working vehicle" class when in Bathurst/Orange for instance, you would have to take it to Sydney or Dubbo (300-400km round trip) for servicing (or more likely warranty work)???

They need to fix their support network first!!

Good point on the servicing issue..

Went to a meeting last night and our friendly L/R man said that they may be here in September and that some of the allocated vehicles are sold and orders will be placed for more.

Of our discussion I was particularly interested in that the 110 can be ordered with the same springs etc as what the 130 has now and you can have or not have traction control!! This will of course adjust the costs.

Not necessarily, although it would certainly help. One advantage of the "working" market is that most vehicles stay more or less in one place. This leads to the possibility, for example, of selling an increased number in Dubbo, which together with a lot of enquiries from the tablelands would justify a dealer in, say, Orange. And work out from there.

After all, taking Dubbo as the example, it provides the service and selling centre for Toyota for a radius of several hundred kilometres. There are a lot of potential buyers inside that circle, and if they can sell to even a small proportion of these, it will still be a large increase in sales for NSW, just from that one dealer. But to do this would need a concerted advertising campaign, demonstrators available at the dealer, and the dealer's support*. Plus a marked improvement in spares availability, including improvements to their distribution system.

John

*Last time I noticed, the only way you could tell that they were a Landrover dealer was a small (600mm x 200mm) sign on the back fence near the service entrance. Compare this with the 100m frontage on a main road with a colour scheme, company name (Heyer Ford), banners, signs and rows of new cars proclaiming that they are Ford dealers!

I talked to my dealer yesterday, he said if i wanted a 110 crewcab, i needed to get my order in asap, as the first shipment arrives July, as to uprated springs, i did not know that was a option.

None of them at all as far as I'm concerned until they (LRA) wrest the total control Barbagallo has in WA away from them, and gets dealerships/servicing in towns outside Perth.
I know Albany still has a thriving dealership but that's no good if you're in the North of the "State of Excitement".
My son who's a miner, knows of 2 others apart from himself who have gone to the darkside for that reason alone.
No one is going to drive (or have trucked) hundreds and maybe thousands of kays to get their vehicle fixed, especially by the present main stealer.
And as virtually no one outside of Perth and it's mostly dubious bunch of experts will even look at a Landie of any kind, it doesn't make them a good proposition which is also the reason I went away from them.
I'll get another LR if and when they fix this situation ....if I'm still young enough to drive by then that is!!!! :(
Alan.

I heard a Land Rover ad on the radio the other day and nearly didnt believe my ears, was "the new home of Land Rover in Canberra", Lennocks.
So someone has an advertising budget.
