Do you think it is dangerous?

I often eat while driving, never thought twice about it. Only usually on the open highway and we're talking a snack, not like a dinner plate or anything...

Mmmm, with risk of getting in twubble, a mate rang me the other day, he asked "what are you upto"?, I replied " trying to smoke a cigarette, drink a can, drive through a round-about, change gears and talk to you on the phone...you?"

Given the traffic conditions, it was only dangerous to me:D

I used to do like 70odd thou kays a year with these bad habits working around vic:eek:

Yes - I'm guilty of it.
Dangerous, well that depends on the situation and what you are eating.

Light traffic, open road eating a vegemite sandwich - much less dangerous than changing a CD.
Heavy traffic, multi-lane road eating a hot pie - IMO you'd have to have rocks in your head.

And then there's doing your makeup in the mirror while driving....

I do it but as you do, only on the open highway and if anthing approaches I put down the sarny/apple/whatever until it's past. I'll also have a drop of water but again only when the road in front is clear and only if it can be done without taking my eyes off the road.
I've seen too many idiots in the metro area doing anything but doing what they should be doing which is watching what's happening around them, ever to do it myself there.
Cheers.

From a physiological point when you eat most of your blood is channeled to digest your food but enough is circulated to operate your vitals and your brain. Your upper and lower limbs have minimal blood flow leading to truth behind the old wives tale "never exercise just after a meal"

Despite knowing this - I still snack behind the wheel or while doing something else - trials of tribulations of multitasking!!!..... but I have noticed that the food always disappears faster and I am still hungry :o

Will make an effort not to do so the next time I catch myself doing so:D

Oh yea, I've eaten dinner, and I'm talking chicken and chips, with a fork, succesfully scanned the trading post, things that go etc, whilst travelling. long straight roads, untrafficked and a van with a lrage flat steering wheel are the key here:D

Not so much a rangie with a 13" wheel:(

easy, hand throttle on, open the door, work your way around the drivers door, stand on the side step, close the door , reach in through the open window, hang onto the steering wheel unzip with the right hand, do business and zip up. then depending on if you have a co-ee or not execute the passanger to the drivers seat climb over the load and come back in through the passanger door after washing your hands from the cab mounted water jerry or just climb back in and keep driving.

I saw a girl on the freeway eating her breakfast cereal from a bowl on her lap.
She leaned across to the passenger seat to grab the milk - maybe some had sloshed out. :lol2: (Yes you do get a good view of things from a Defender:twisted:)

I eat snack food driving - burgers and the like.

Easier in the auto :ohyes:

You have to pick your food so it can be put down or held in teeth. Could be a job for the mortician to remove the paddle pop stick from the back of the throat though.

I'll only ever eat simple things whilst driving and only on open roads, never in traffic.

I must say in-car GPS navigators has been a wonderful invention, its been a while since I've seen anyone driving along with a map in front of them perched over the steering wheel...

try cooking a jaffle on the move.My soufflé always drop when if I cook them whilst driving, I think it has something to do with my tooting the horn and yelling at stupid drivers holding their mobile phones whilst driving! :D ;)

No on a serious note it has to be as dangerous as using the phone which we all know is illegal. I was driving on the Shoalhaven Heads Road a few months ago and came up behind a learner driver. You could see they were not very confident by their control of the car. Then after about 2Km to my horror I saw the driving instructor open a 2L bottle of Coke and hand it over to the learner driver to drink. Is there any wonder some P platers are such bad drivers? They were taught horrendous habits by morons like this one. :nazilock:

When I was driving pilot vehicles, I've seen many truckies do it. Either the hand throttle or cruise control on, open the door and step outside onto the step, hanging onto the steering wheel through the open door with one hand while using the other to do the job. Wouldn't try this from a "cab-over" though (truckies will understand why).

I've never thought twice about eating while driving, especially when out in the middle of nowhere escorting a wide load at 80 km/hr or less. Always had a fridge full of food and drink right next to me.

But a few people have been horrified to hear that I've also read a lot of books while driving (in the same job). Used to always have one of those "slip over" steering wheel covers. Could wedge the bottom corners of a book into the steering wheel cover to hold it in position, and read the book while driving - have probably read more books while doing that job than at any other time in my life (you'd be surprised at how many truckies read while driving).

Unfortunately, the eyes aren't what they used to be and I can't do this any more - can't even see the writing in the book with my normal glasses, and can't see the road with the reading glasses on.

No on a serious note it has to be as dangerous as using the phone which we all know is illegal.

I have to disagree, the problem with mobile phones is that the brain defaults to giving the phone all the attention. Just look at how many people you see who walk onto the road with traffic coming just because they are on the phone. Most people can eat while they walk without getting themselves run over. Eating is kind of automatic.

I do agree that eating while you are driving does increase your reaction time slightly cause you have to drop the food first, and can take your eyes off the road momentarily, but as nearly everyone has said, choose the food and traffic conditions wisely and it's not a problem.

Many years ago, I was driving from Richmond (NSW) to Wagga Wagga. I stopped in at the burger chain to get a burger at Yass. I continued driving, and was (yes, scald me here) driving with my knees, eating the burger. Up over the crest comes Mr. Plod :coplight:. We met eyes, and watched eachother as we passed in opposite directions, burger to my mouth, still with both hands. I looked down at my speedo, and it was nudging 130. Well, he turned around and pulled me up. He casually strolled up to my car (burger away, mouth and hands wiped by now) and said, "how fast were you doing back there buddy"

"umm, probably 125 Sir"

"127 actually. Do you have a reason for going that fast there?"

"I didnt really notice my speed. I, er, was eating"

"I noticed"

he said that bit with a grin on his face. Gave me a fine, and went on his way.

Now when I eat burgers in my car, its with one hand on the wheel :D

Blknight.aus

actually it was a gas bottle stove top burner in the passanger foot well of a 6x6.

Its a bit of a story but it starts out

me:"I feel like something to eat"
pas" What would you like?"
(I had a fridge in place of the center console)
me:"bacon and egg jaffle"
pas:" you cant stop to make a jaffle"
me:"dont need to stop"
pas:" you cant make a jaffle on the move"
me:"care to make that a bet?"

and ends with me having to explain to the convoy commander where the hell we managed to get jaffles and hot coffee from when we pulled up.

its probably better if you dont ask.

I guess if you want to be picky you shouldn't talk to your passengers, wave to landies or do a multitude of other things that might lesson your 100% total concentration on the road ahead either.

probably one of the more dangerous things ive had happen while dricing was when i had a female friend in the car who thought she'd take advantage of me being a bit of a captive victim, i'll leave out the details as this isnt the mudpit, but i still think it was hillarious considering i was driving past the local police station when it happened......

The Police on this forum may answer this one better, however while there may not be a specific offence for eating or drinking at the wheel, can't an officer use other regulations in it's place? Things like "negligent driving" or Road Rule 297 "Driver to have proper control of vehicle." or Road Rule 298-1 "A driver must not consume alcohol while driving." (298-1 is only for people driving in NSW.)

It is then up to a court to determine what "proper control" is in relation to drinking from the 2 litre bottle or munching the big mac was an offence or not.

Crash tests show that impact at 40kph can be fatal without restraints. Teeth at 30kph might not be fatal to you but might be to your future offspring.:p

Got yelled at by a cop for using my mobile at a set of lights a couple of months ago.

I wasn't, but he got really angry when I vehemently denied it.

Eventually I had to sheepishly admit that I had been eating my breakfast cereal while the lights were red.

He muttered something about 'next thing you'll be having bacon and eggs at the wheel' and let me off.

I think the only offence I could have been booked for would have been dangerous driving, except I wasn't driving at the time.

we both had seatbelts on, add to that we were in a 100 series landcruiser wagon, dual front airbags and a 'roobar more suited to a kenworth, and no doubt, ANYTHING that i hit at 40 km/h would be dead!

Teeth at 30kph might not be fatal to you but might be to your future offspring.

I've riden home from night shift, drinking an Iced Coffee or having a smoke.
Up the main drag from the Steelworks at 110km/h...

But the best on-road I've ever seen, was a guy on a GSXR1000 riding along sending a Text message!!!

Cars etc are boring, the local Heavy Recovery Contractors watch DVDs on screens mounted above the windscreen on long runs.

I am sure the police on here will correct me but I always thought there was a law somewhere that said that a driver must have BOTH hands on steering wheel at all times, with the exception of changing gears.
A few years ago, a truck driver was booked around this area for "eating a salad roll whist driving". I belive it went to court and the fine stuck as he could not demonstrate how he could have held the salad roll and had both hnads on steering wheel.

Having said that, I am also guilty of it
