View Full Version : 4.6 Oil Useage

Was hoping those in the know can possibly let me know if this is normal.
I have the 4.6 engine in my D2, over 7,000k's now since it went in. It had it's 1500km oil change and is due for the next service in just under 5,000's.
I checked the dipstick the other day and it's at the point where it indicates it needs topping up.
Is this normal?
Should a brand new 4.6 engine use any oil whatsoever?
I have been advised by the LR specialist who put the engine in that they do use a small amount of oil, and it's normal to have to top up in between services.
I mainly do city driving with a few weekend trips. Don't drive it hard, as it is not a sports car, it's not leaking oil, and does not seem to be burning any from the back.
I have never had a new engine that has required oil top ups, so I am hoping some can give me their knowledge and or understanding.
Thanks
JB.

Hi JB,
Mine is the same. I've done about 2500 km since the initial 1500 service, and the oil level was below the minimum last time I checked it. It took a litre. I am hoping that it is just because it is still bedding in.
Cheers,
Terry

G/day JB
Mine has done 60k and between 5k oil changes does require a top up!
Dipstick level is around the halfway mark.... between changes.....
using Valvoline engine armour oil...
cheers smally

This is what Range rov are telling me.
As they are a old engine by design they will consume oil. They say once it does it's 10k it wil settle down more and use less, however there will be a propensity to use oil and will require a top up in between services.
Thanks

having absolutely NO technical expertise--
I'd say thats bollocks!
yes it may need oil until the oil rings are bedded in,,
after that,, it should do 5K on its ear!
all motors use oil,,,
none should need a top up to do 5K--
my reasoning?
if mine can do it,,
a mass produced, assembly line motor with 100K on it
a hand built, BRAND NEW engine should be able to do it too,,
fair enough if you are giving it a hard time,,,
but who gives their 4.6 a hard time?
(according to JC, a big rev is benificial:angel:,, words to live by I reckon,,;))

I have a 4.6 fitted by Range Rov on my DII as well.
It too has had alarmingly high oil consumption compared the previous 4.0 engine. I also noticed that at high revs, there's a bit of white smoke from the exhaust, which is a bit disconcerting....

Are these autos or manuals?
The reason I ask is that if you use engine breaking a lot, you generally will use a lot more oil.

an auto,,
but why?
lack of combustion pressure?

I am surprised at the high oil consumption.
The 4.0 and 4.6 heads have teflon seals on the valve guides to reduce oil consumption, and meet emission standards, so generally they use much less oil than the earlier 3.9s.
My 3.9 went from about 1/2 -1 litre per 5000Kms with old type seals to almost nothing when I fitted new 4.6 heads. With the original heads refitted with teflon seals on inlet only , mine now uses about 3/4 litre per 5000Kms.
They may have deleted the exhaust seals if the heads were rebuilt as the exhaust seals cause a well known valve stem carboning problem. it is better to use a little oil than have the exhaust valves jam.

Hi Phillip, yes heads were redone in the process, as the previous owner had cooked the engine.
