Hi Guys,
Sorry to bleet on about winches and all things related...
Have any of you guys used this VR synthetic before?
4x4 Accessories - VR REDLINE Synthetic Winch Rope - 4wd Recovery Gear | 4wd Accessories | 4wd Equipment and Camping Gear Australia | Axe and Shovel Holder | Combo Shovel | Synthetic Winch Rope | Camping Lights| Autofridge Eutectic Refrigerators (http://www.4x4equip.com.au/listProduct/4x4+Accessories/VR+REDLINE+Synthetic+Winch+Rope)
It looks expensive but its also supposed to be much longer lasting due to its abrasion resistance and UV stability.
Any thoughts?

Funny I was looking at this stuff yesterday....
When I was looking for synthetic rope I'm pretty sure all good quailty ropes are abrasion resistant and uv stable.....if there not all abrasive resistant they are all UV stable these days
I actually ended up getting mine from the states....

Out of interest, which brand did you end up with?

It has an outer protective sheath over the core synthetic rope.

Terms like uv stable and abrasion resistant are thrown around but what do they actually mean?
For insistance the UV resistance of Dynaline is quoted as 50% strength retention after 3 years. Spec sheet is HERE (http://www.ropelocker.co.uk/pdf/Dynaline_Winch_Rope_Technical_Data.pdf) Is this rope UV stable? No actual test standards are quoted so have no idea about the actual UV exposure. Is that UV exposure equivalent to 3 years in the UK, 3 years high in the Arctic circle or 3 years in the Australian outback?
Now if you lose 50% strength due to 3 years UV exposure, thrown in some moderate use and some mild abrasion then a lightly used rope which is 3 years old could have lost 60-70% strength! Time for a new winch line?
Unfortunately many manufacturers and suppliers do not issue proper specification sheets which include details of test methods used. This makes it difficult to compare between similar items from different manufacturers.

Brendan
