View Full Version : puma transmission slop

Just had the 2007 Defender 110 in for warranty work, and am concerned about XS transmission play. Dealer compared with 2 others and said it was OK.

Here's the problem: In low range locked, when changing gears if there is transmission wind up, I get severe drive line clatter when the clutch is depressed. The drive shafts seem to rotate back and forth and result in gear grating. I jacked up wheels (one at a time) to see how much free play there is..and it's a lot. Measuring the tyre rotation at the tread, it's 360mm max (6th gear high range unlocked). That's over 1/3 of a metre. Diff play accounts for only 40mm. Low range gears when locked account for 90-115mm tyre travel. Put it into neutral and it's 225mm. I figure that must release some wind up and cause the clatter.

Anybody have anything similar, or know what the problem is? As far as I figure, it appears to be in the transmission.

On something simpler, can anyone recommend a good long range fuel tank and water tank to suit a Simpson Desert trip?

Thanks for any comments

we have been moaning about our tx back lash, dealer says its fine, other have got an 09 spec rear prop which seems to answer most issues.

as for fuel and water do a search quite a few of us have the wheel arch tanks from opposite lock made by a south african co front runner.

i think long ranger do one for the 07 model but dont know anyone who has fitted one to the new model.

our 09 spec only stays in diff lock for 2 seconds :(
And then it comes out all by itself......dealer is gonna look at it

Regarding long ranger fuel tank. I fitted one to my 08 Puma. All good, only issue is you need to give up the rear step...

Thanks for the replies & info. Pbroz, do you know if the Long Ranger tank is the same specs as for the Td5 models. They have different in tank fuel pump to the pumas, but no one I have spoken to yet, can tell me. The local ARB has quoted on a Td5 tank & couldn't find the puma listed I his tank reference sheet.

My 09 Puma had quite bad transmission slop, would clunk on every gear change. Did this with the 1st rear diff, then the second rear diff. The third has no clunk and feels nice and tight. The diffs were changed for either oil leaks or noise, not backlash, but this last one which I had to wait over a month for is good.

Hey Bilbo, did you get this done as a warranty issue, or did you have to fork out some folding money. I'm up for a service soon and was wondering about my gear changing sound effects also.

What muddymech said. I have an 07 - but I had the rear prop shaft replaced under warranty - it's heaps better! drives like a Bentley. ;)

the OL aux tank is a good thing - gives me up to 1200km per tank.
