My brother has gone and got himself a girl with decent taste and is shopping around for a D1 for her. Is there any one down there who could give him a hand to steer clear of the lemons and point him in the direction of a reputable establishment for servicing.

He has found one he is looking at today, but has a second gear prob 94 td1, R380 240,000k.

I have used Ritter Automotive in Burwood and they seem to know there stuff - fixed a few issues that the main dealer stuffed me around with. Not so cheap.

If he doesn't mind travelling to Geelong, Hunter and Cuthill are very good independent Land Rover and BMW specialists. 03 5229 4299. Gordon Cuthill is the Land Rover man.

Thanks for the tip's all. Still looking for a D1 V8i (Dual fuel) or a TDi. Looked at quite a few now and boy is there some crapola out there. One I drove in Tourquay was so sloppy in the front end I had to pull over. Looked under the bonnet only to discover the left-hand shock was sticking through the strut! and the chick selling it was using it as a daily driver. I pointed it out to her and she just said "oh, I thought if felt a bit funny".

Anyway, there are heaps for sale, but very few that are decent. We shall keep looking I guess. At least in Vic it costs the same to rego a V8 as it does a 4 cylinder.

I have a question though. Which is more expensive to maintain. The V8i or the TDi????

If you're buying a 200K V8 then as a preventative engine saver I would seriously consider a radiator removal and rodding, refurbishing/replacing the cooling fan viscous unit and also replace the water pump while it was all apart. Any overheating kills these engines -almost instant terminal damage

Can't comment about the Diesel but choose carefully what ever you buy.

Thanks Grumbles, I'll be sure to pay close attention to the cooling systems. Most of the V8i's I've looked at have been around the 150k mark but I'll still give it a good looking into, as you never know.

We'll get something eventually.

We have a winner!!!

OK so after a month of constant searching and checking out some real dogs, we have finally found one with everything we want at a very, very good price.

We got it from a nice elderly Turkish couple who have owned it from new, driven it to work and on the occaisional holiday. Never been off-road, not a scrath/mark/dint/rip/tear/noise coming from the thing. It is immaculate.

What is it?

1996 Landrover Discovery ES V8i (3.9L) Duel Fuel 220,000kms

What's it got?

Full service history & Log books
5 brand new off-road Michelin tyres
new brake discs all road
New engine mounts
New Contol arm bushes & bearings
Fully certified RACV vehicle inspection certificate
Full leather interior
Electric adjustable seat
Twin sunroof
7 seater
Nokia hands free
6 stacker CD Player
Tow bar (square & Tow ball)
Rear Brake Assist for towing
Factory Side steps (Black
Factory flare guards
Factory ES alloys (black)
RWC & 8 months Rego

We didn't care about the colour, but it's a metallic blue/greeny looking turquoise. mnore green me thinks but I'm somewhat colour blind!!!

I'll post some pics soon. We pick it up tonight and we can't wait! We'll be ready for some 4wding adventures in VIC by the weekend.
