Hi all can someone help us with fitting a Thomas winch and PTO unit from a series vehicle to a Defender. Would like to know if it is possible and if so what is involved in adapting it to my 130. I would assume the forward facing PTO unit fitment is where I might find it differcult.
Kindest regards

I can't see anyway it could work, the winch drum might be the same, but as you said the PTO drive unit that bolts to the g'box/transfer would be very different;)

Mate as already stated, the series drop box won't fir a defender. The rest of the gear, ie winch drive shafts etc will work. I picked up the drop box for my fender second hand of a wrecker in harvey bay, but it took alot of ringing around to find it.

I fitted a PTO winch from a 40 series Tojo to my rig. Just modified the drive shaft lengths to suit and fabricate brackets to mount the shaft support bearings, new uni's etc.

As I cut the length of the dribve shafts to suit, the key ways that normaly locate in the uni's were non existant. After talking to a few blokes I know, I drilled the shaft through the grub screw hole and through the top of the uni and installed HT bolts instead. At the winch output shaft I used a brass bolt as the shear pin, 1/4 inch I think.

Took a few goes to line up the drive shafts, but nothing to difficult.

Definatelt alot more work that installing an electric jobby and a bit more weight but so much easier to maintain and so much better to use, will pull all day!

Happy to provide more info if you need it - Good luck;)

cheers

i have fitted one to mine, i had the right PTO drive for my t-case, do a search and you will find my post

you will need to make you own cradle, i ended up removing the exhaust fitting the PTO shafts than fitted a new exhaust to suit
