I'm looking into getting some new springs for the D1 300Tdi.
Yes yes I am going to probably go through suspension stuff.
Does anyone have non-linear (variable) rear springs, and what would be their advantange?
Also if you have Dobinsons, which ones did you get?
all 2" raised:
front:
standard duty
heavy duty
rear:
45mm standard duty linear
45mm standard duty variable
50mm 150kg linear
50mm 220kg variable

all thoes springs are designed for a specific task.
you need to figure out what you want them to do/ what suits your application.
are you
towing heavy trailers
rock hopping
touring around bondi
touring around oz....
once you have worked out what you require of said springs you can then decide on rates/lifts/variable/liniear etc.

Thanks Phil, I have been given advice on which rate of spring I should fit with my accessories and for my intended use.
I am more after what other people have fitted and what their thoughts are on their choice.
For example: are the 150kg ones really firm when unloaded? Do the standard duty ones feel too soft and now you wish you had gone a bit firmer? etc
Generally, what would be the purpose of the variable rate springs compared to linear ones? :)

The purpose of the variable springs is to give a slower reaction to small bumps.ie to give a better ride on smooth roads, yet have a greater load capacity once the variable part of the spring binds from either a rough road or heavy load.

I have +3" 300 pounds but I need stiffer ones with what I have, my fronts are 280 pounders.
When you go over 2" you need to also look at other things (drive shafts etc) as you will get vibration.

Are you sure you have 280 in the front? I run 180 and find it borders on being too stiff.

Thats what the guy at dobinson said as I told him that I needed heavyer springs for when the winch and bar are fitted.
He said that @ 3" spring lift that was the only poundage I can get.
But I may swap them later for 5" coils from the uk

he was probably right for off the shelf springs,,but the options for custom wound springs to suit your lift and weights are endless.
so if that is the case there isnt much much point importing springs they would probably double the cost of a custom wound pair. my last set of custom dobinsons cost me $225.

Is there anyone running Dobinsons springs on their D1?
I'm try to get the right ones so the Disco sits level, but there seems to be some confusion over which exact ones to get.
If you are using Dobinsons, could you let me know which ones you are using and if you have a bullbar, diesel, winch etc?

Nice1guv,
Don't know whether you're stuck at 2 inch lift, but I have just recently swapped out my sagged OME 2" lift coils for some standard 80 series and 100 series LandBruiser front coils (Kings KTFS94C (80 series fronts) for the front and KTFS69C (100 series fronts) for the back to be exact).
That combined with my 2" extended Rancho shocks (which are on their way out :() have given the Disco a solid 3" lift. Very easy to do, just had to flip the bottom coil locator upside down and everything is good.
Though I'm yet to take it offroad (only did it last night). I did a LOT of research on it and ended up talking to a local Disco owner that had previously done the swap and had no issues whatsoever, both on and offroad. He had a similar load distribution to me so I was happy with his comments. My Disco is a 98 tdi auto with steel bullbar, XD9000 winch, permanent roller drawers in the back with approx. 50 - 100kgs always in there. Only difference was he had a second battery up front, which I will eventually have as well.
The only issue I've found is the steering is a little flighty, so I will be looking into getting the hubs slotted to regain my caster angle on the front wheels.
With the 2" extended shocks, you shouldn't need to worry about brake line overextension as the open length of the shock stops the wheel articulating too far before the standard front brake lines are compromised.
It's nice to get a little more air under the Disco though :D. It almost makes the 245/75R16's look a little small . Although going bigger than these looks like lots more $$ (flares, 4.11:1 cwp's, possibly upgrade axles, let alone the tyre cost).
Have fun deciding.
Cheers

Mine are 3 inch dobo coils in a 200tdi with bar and soon to have winch
