After much confusion about who makes what, I have ordered a sliver 17x8” steel rim as a test to ensure they will fit my D3. The price at $125 is $20 cheaper than another brand who said they do but now say no we don’t do a 17x8 for the D3. Will see what turns up next week for the test fitting.

Am still looking for hub centre caps probably will use Holden Ute’s as well as Holden wheel nuts at 14x1.5 twist.

Still havent decided on what LT construction tyre to get, but am thinking Coopers ST 245/70/17 is the way to go and be legal in Qld. Coopers tell me they changed the compound in ST's 2 years ago to stop chipping.

I have "King" brand 17x8" with Cooper STT's and they got me through the Cape trip where the others had shredded 2 tyres. The ST's only have the same side wall as the ATR's whereas the STT's have a 3 ply sidewall and reinforced tread :)

Garry,

Thanks for the info on your trip and how the STT's went. I have bought at least four sets of Coopers in the past, ST's on the Rangie, and HT+ on the D3 and I know the STT's are very tough, however I think I will end up with BFG AT 265/65/17 Light Truck 10ply and 3ply walls rated at 120S which is 1400kg and 180kph at $329 fitted and balanced.

RE centre caps, will get some when rim arrives, not Holden though but after market, am told there's heaps to choose from.

Thanks again for the info,

Ryall

Still haven’t had a rim arrive :( yet to try on the car, but I have made some progress in deciding that the tyre is going to be a Pirelli Scorpion ATR LT 245/70/17 which is 1360kg max load and a maximum speed of 170km, with an overall diameter of 774mm so its legal in QLD. This tyre has good write-ups in last years AT tyre test and again on page 82 of this month’s 4WD action mag. I am defiantly not going to change my mind again I think :) Nah, I'll stick with this. Cost around $330ea.

It might pay you to shop around for Pirelli ATR prices. I've just purchased LT245/70-16 (LI 113) for my D2 - 1st price was $295 F&B and 2nd price $240 F&B. I understand there are 2 importers with 2 different price structures. A few months ago I priced LT245/70-17 from the 1st supplier at $320 (researching D3 tyre options).

I can only report that the ATRs are quite good in sloppy stuff - much better than I expected.

Recommend highly the STT over the ST. Quieter, gripper, less prone to chips.

17x8" steel rims arrived, but had to reject them as they had a 30mm off set, which in QLD just aint legal as the D3 has not got a solid beam axle. 40 to 53 would be ok but I really dont want to give the insurance Co an excuse.

I'm now looking at mags, etc.. :(

I've seen reported a 17x8 for the D3 with 38mm offset - don't know if that's near enough or not. I have it noted that they might be Dynamic brand but can't be sure.
