Has anyone else got an Iridium 9555 phone? I received mine yesterday and have been playing around with it. Works very well and is a lot smaller than the old one I had.

The only issue I am having is that it will receive SMS but doesn't want to send anything:confused:

It sounds like a setting in the phone issue, but of course being the weekend all the Satellite service stuff is closed until Monday. So if anyone else has one can they PM me the Service Center number in the messaging menu settings so I can check it.

Early days as I've only had it 24 hours. Its a lot smaller and the key boards is very positive to use. I had the 9500 which is a lot more fragile and a lot larger. Anyway I'll put it to the test in the coming months.

I have been told that you can not SMS from Telstra Iridium to/from Optus phones. Is that correct?

I have a Thuraya and can not SMS from/to Telstra phones... Complained to the telecommunication ombudsman but was told they can not intervene as it is a commercial decision by Telstra not to open their gateway...

Well a call to Telstra came back with the response that they have escalated the call to The States. The SMS should work.

As for Optus to Telstra, don't know, but I have seen other comments on the web also mentioning this.

Howard, are you finding the Thuraya to be reliable for reception? From what I understand they aren't all that reliable for a signal. I spoke to a couple of people who have actually ditched them in favour of the Iridium phones. Surprised me because I did think they were a good option.

thanks for coming back. Not quite sure what you mean about it being escalated to The States - what was escalated?

I had a few problems with the Thuraya initially - the handset kept re-booting and it occured at random and intermittently. They replaced the handset and the problem seems to have gone away although I have seen it re-boot twice.

Out on the Tablelands (from Kuranda to Croydon and around Mareeba-Chillagoe-Mt Molloy) the signal is strong and you have no worries communication even mobile at 100kph.

The escalation is because the SMS should be working and isn't - even on a Motorola 9505A handset.

All fixed, firmware patch and everything works well. Can even send 1000 character SMS now. Dont think I'd want to though, my fingers would go numb with the effort!

Does the new one have predictive text for sms or is it still old style like the 9505a?
