I have had the Outback Storage Drawers before in my D2 5 seater. They were fantastic and one of my favourite accessories and extremely useful. But, they were heavy unladen, and I put in heavy duty springs.

With my Deefer, I was looking for solutions as it is a 7 seater so I want something that is relatively easy to swap in and out when required.

I have had a look at these at Opposite Lock...

Has anyone purchased these? Any comments welcome.

I checked them out - I didn't think they worked too well, they didn't run smoothly, plastic stuff will break eventually and generally not up to the standard of the Outback drawers (which I put in my Puma). I haven't had any issue with the weight of the Outback system either, mate. I drove around Australia chockers no probs - standard springs. A Fender has a big payload - might as well use it. I never get worse than 10l / 100km either.

But the Black Widow setup might be better as their system allows the only known easily done cargo barrier to go with it. ;)

Sorry - just realised you're a 7 seater - mate, it's one or the other I'd have thought.

It doesn't really help svx37, but for folks up my way, there's a boilermaker chap in my area that's started making 4wd drawers and roof bars and things. His work appears to be first class, and I'm quite sure he'd be far cheaper than the Opposite Locks and the ARBs. And a nicer bloke you would never meet. His name's Steve and his number is 0414270164.

I looked at the OL ones too. They are the Boab system (imported by Dolium) and don't look too bad except for the price. They are a simple slide and plastic box arrangement but I wasn't to happy on the plastic box quality.

I just made this up for the back of my County on saturday, one sheet of flooring grade chipboard and a pair of 90kg load roller bearing drawer runners. All I have to do now is cover the exterior in carpet / rubber matting :)

Only downside is the weight, but cost was under $200 ;)

and swmbo thought I was setting the ceiling :D:D:D

Hi SVX,

I bought the Boab drawers for my Puma, for the reason that they looked pretty easy to take in and out... but they aren't.

If you just leave them in the back without bolting them down they bounce around and are a general pain in the rear. I ended up drilling some holes and bolting them to the floor. then got a sheet of aluminium bent up to make a roof for them.

Also, they are exactly the right height for the old defender, (td5 tdi) but the Puma has a lower height wheel arch, which means you don't get a flat rear area.

and lastly, the drawer doesn't come out far enough to access the rear 2 boxes without taking the first 2 boxes out first.

The good points...
They are a fair bit cheaper than the Outback system.

I like the plastic "gomo" boxes as you can get a few spares and then take what you need depending on where you are going (have a tool box, recovery box, camping box, ect)

The rollers are nice and strong and its made from pretty heavy duty steel.

The "dead space" between the drawers and wheel arch on the right hand side is a decent size for hiding odds and sods.

Any way that all I can think of at the moment.

I'll take a photo tomorrow if I get time and post it here.

Thanks Craig for the honest appraisal and for your photos - much appreciated.

I don't like the idea that they are not level with the wheel arch.:(
I don't like the idea that they are not easy to take in and out.:(
They are the 2 main reasons I was going to go that way.
For the extra money, I might have to go down the Outback Draws road as they are probably just as easy to unbolt as the Boab.

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Nigel

good evening!

I build my own system just last week. see the photos attached: L shaped aluminum profiles bolted to the floor, haefele drawer slides bolted to them, on which the aluminum frame runs in which the boxes sit. pretty easy and very cheap (under 200$ including the boxes).

http://www.aulro.com/app/data/500/medium/IMG_1278.JPG

the boxes are 40 wide and 60 long, notice the different heights. I could put in a second drawer system to the right.

fyi, next I will put in a platform running from window sill to window sill. this covers the cargo area and one can sleep on it (had it before, works like a treat). this is why I can stack the boxes.

the trick is to decide first on your boxes and then build the system around them.

hope this helps someone, all the best, cheers, axel

Here's a couple of snaps of my black widow setup, is strong looks good and tidy. But it would not be easily removed and this does impact on the versatility of the load space for large/ long objects or seating. The carpet used to line the unit is rather slippery and a bit at odds with the hose out utilitarian nature of the vehicle.

Sorry couldn't help myself, built my false floor on the weekend out of 2.5mm Ali plate. I still have a couple of things to finish up, but all pretty good with fit... It takes three plastic fishing tubs...

in my last email I was talking about how I will continue with my storage system. here comes the update:

*) the platform sits on 20mm square steel tubes
*) there are no cross members which means: take off the top boards and the cargo area is fully available (but not the space over the wheel arches)
*) all sections can be lifted lifted up to access the gear from the inside ... and screwed down for saftey when offroading
*) the fridge (right behind the passenger seat) is of the same height and is easily accessible as well.

the finishing touches will be glueing the lining where not done yet and adjusing the height of single platform segments.

and another happy camper is on his way ... axel
