I split firewood for years with an axe. I love to burn Redgum, but Geeeeezzz it's B***dy hard. I always wanted a hydraulic splitter, so I collected bits and pieces over a couple of years and built myself one. All up, about $450. It's got a Nissan SD22 diesel, a BIG single stage pump, 2400 psi bypass valve and a 4" bore ram. Probably a bit over engineered, but I wanted it to be able to split anything I threw at it.
I'm not a big fan of winter, but at least I get to use my log splitter......I love it.

Now you just need a rotating dolly so that you don't have to lift that first half back up to the jaws.

I have plans to add a lifting rack that will lift a few blocks up to operating height and also act as a bench so the half blocks wont drop to the ground. I've already got the hydraulics for it, but haven't got around to building it yet.

Nice job, I've considered building myself one but not quite sure.
I like this one though.

Yeah, I've seen that one too, it's pretty cool. One day I might see if I can incorporate a multi blade head onto mine.

I'll take some pics of my mates here.

I've just got in from using it, it's sitting in our paddock ATM, been splitting 36" Yellow Box donuts.

Not sure of the ram size, but it's pretty big, Kubota 4cyl diesel, etc, etc, cobbled together by my neighbour who's made a few now.

It has hydraulic tilt so the ram works vertically, but trailers horizontally, thank my deity as it's hard enough rolling the donuts to the ram as it is, let alone try to lift them onto a bed.
BTW this Yellow Box is so dense and gnarly in the grain, I can stall the diesel sometimes

I've thought about a splitter ever since I sent a steel wedge into orbit, & it re- landed using my wife's honda accord bonnet as an aiming point :o

Nice bit of gear.I need one too,the back doesnt enjoy spliting wood as much as I doo.
Cut a 4foot dia jarrah log yesterday,6 rings weighed 1.1tonne.I couldnt shift the rings, had to split them before loading the trailer.
The guy who I got my Husky from had a good setup. His had an elevator that fed the split wood into his trailer.

I like this one, but it looks like their just splitting pine.........I wonder how it would go with a big lump of Fiddleback Redgum, Jarrah or Grey Box.
